How to Make Our Modern Mini Floating Hexagons Wall Hanging
At first glance, hexagon quilt block shapes can cause many quilters to think three-intersection-Y-seams! Not so with this all-new Floating Hexagon modern mini quilt.
In this blog-exclusive free project, each hexagon shape is created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux-hexagon halves are stitched in rows, with all straight seams, and with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic!
Floating Hexagons Mod-Mini Wall Hanging finished measurements are approx. 18″ W x 18″ L. Use scant 1/4″ seam allowances.
Supplies
- Assorted 2-1/2″ precut fabric strips, 10-inch squares, fat quarters, or fabric scraps (for all hexagons) we chose Bundle-Bee Backgrounds and Confetti Cottons Vintage Crayola Fabrics by Riley Blake.
- 1-1/4 yd. (binding, and backing fabric)
- 1/2 yd. batting
- Non-Permanent Marking Pens
- Grandmother’s One Patch Template: Faux-Hexagon
Construction
- The Grandmother’s One-Patch Template set, the faux-hexagon, is used for this project.
- Only the 2” shape is traced and cut from the fabric, including the end pieces. (Watch Nancy demo this online, it’s a lot easier to show this in action).
- Cut assorted 2-1/2″ fabric strips from background fabrics, stack-cut 2–4 layers.
- At the end of strip set, align template and trace a “finishing piece” using template markings.
Because we’re using 10-inch fabric squares, we found it most efficient to always trace the ‘smaller’ 2-inch “finishing piece.”
- Rotate template and align the straight edge of the template along the edges of the stacked fabric strips. Trace side markings for the 2-inch hexagon using a non-permanent marking pen.
- Rotate template and continue marking background fabric half-hexagon shapes along crosswise strips, as needed.
Our Floating Hexagons Mod Mini Quilt background uses 44 half-hexies, 10 left mini finishing pieces, and 10 right mini finishing pieces.
- Use rotary cutting tools to cut along marked lines.
- Trace and cut 3 pair half-hexagons from assorted sold colors 2-1/2″ precut fabric strips, fat quarters, or fabric scraps (for floating hexagons).
- Arrange the hexagons and mini finishing pieces in 10 rows, as shown below.
- Stitch pieces together in rows.
- The faux-hexagons are sewn together with straight seams. Make sure to off-set each angled seam 1/4″. There are no Y-seams in this column quilt project!
- Press seam allowances open.
- Quilt as desired. We opted to echo-quilt our mod mini.
We used the 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, and Frixon marking pens to mark six random hexagons—mark 1/4-inch inside hexagon seams.
We gathered three coordinating Madeira Aerofil Threads,
threaded the Baby Lock Sashiko Machine,
and echo-stitched the background hexagons—along the traced lines. The Sashiko machine stitches replicate the look of hand-sewing!
- The remaining background hexies were echo-stitched with Madeira Monofil thread—on our Baby Lock Destiny II, using a 1/4-inch quilting foot.
- Trim the quilt sandwich to measure 18-inches square.
- Bind using your favorite binding method.

I enjoy mini projects, they come together quickly. In my mind I have the fabric and pattern selected to this project–will see how it turns out–half hex here I come!!!
Peggy V
I have never done a mini think it is about time I try. Will look for inspiration for this project!!!

I would love to win the template package. I have been wanting to make a hexagon quilt but have been worried about sewing all the angles. The mod hex would be so much simpler. I need to explore mod prints and colors for the challenge since it is outside my comfort zone. I usually stick to more traditional. This will be a fun new challenge.
Anne Z
I plan to take a traditional block and give it a modern twist.
Pat
I have never made a “modern quilt”. I tend to stick to the more traditional pieced blocks and fabrics. This mini quilt will be the perfect size to give it a try. Thanks for the chance to win the template.
Clovis
I entered last year contest. Haven’t decided what to do this time. Good luck.
Beverly
I think mini half-hexis in bright geometric prints would be fun.
Bonnye
I like mini projects. Hexagons have always been a favorite.
Dorothy Martin
Scraps of beautiful fabrics have been waiting for this opportunity! I can hardly wait to work on them with this marvelous theme and spectacular instructions. Thank you, Thank you!
Kathy
I usually do more traditional quilts but have a really good idea I want to try for this mod quilt. I like minis and have a variety of them but not mods. I think it will be something scrappy though. Thank you for the opportunity to win this template.
Gail Beam
I think the minis would make a cute doll quilt.
Jennifer Reinke
How fun this would be to do! Thank you for the many ideas–I would love to do this in rich jewel tones.
Nancy
I have never made a modern quilt yet, but find a growing interest in attempting one. I do find mini quilts so fun. This just might be the perfect project to try a first modern quilt. Thank you.
Sherril
I had designed a modern quilt a few months ago and this is the perfect opportunity to present the finished quilt design. Thank you.
Carol
IF I MAKE THIS, I WILL PROBABLY CHOOSE SPRING COLORS- MAYBE A BLUE/PINK COMBINATION, WITH A SPLASH
OF YELLOW AND LEAF GREEN.
