Then, below, check out Nancy’s Timesaving Bias Tape Sewing Tips as shared by her longtime friend, and co-worker, Deanna Springer. See how using the right tools makes the sewing process enjoyable, even for a beginner!
Nancy’s Timesaving Bias Tape Sewing Tips
- Gather fabrics, supplies & tools – as outlined in our NEW! Stitch it! Sisters Program 104: Potholder Plus video and in our NEW! Potholder Plus & Towel Topper Bundle Box.
Clover’s 1″ Bias Tape Maker and Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl are the two notions you’ll need to easily make yards and yards of bias binding!
- Trace your Pot Holder Plus Pattern Pieces from the NEW! No-Hassle Kitchen Collection Pattern and cut out Pot Holder Plus pocket, pocket ShirTailor interfacing, pot holder front fabric, two layers Wrap-N-Zap, one layer Insul-Fleece, pot holder back fabric, and pot holder back ShirTailor interfacing.
- Press ShirTailor interfacing to back of pot holder Pocket Fabric, and Pot Holder Back Fabric. Set aside pot holder pocket.
- Layer cut pieces in order: Pot holder back fabric, Wrap-N-Zap, Insul-Fleece, Wrap-N-Zap, pot holder front fabric – as detailed in the NEW! No-Hassle Kitchen Collection Pattern and in our NEW! Stitch it! Sisters Program 104: Potholder Plus video (above). Wonder Clip layers at edges.
- Baste stitch around pot holder edges, using scant 1/4″ seams. Set pot holder aside.
- Cut 1-7/8″ bias fabric strips.
- Seam together 1-7/8″ bias fabric strips, using 1/4″ seams.
- Insert 1-7/8″ bias fabric strip into Clover’s 1″ Bias Tape Maker using Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl, to persuade fabric strip into maker.
- Press 1″ bias tape, as it exits the bias tape maker.
- For one Pot Holder Plus, you’ll need about 48″ of 1″ Bias Tape. For this photo, I displayed by bias tape in a “Z”-shape, for Zieman 🙂
- Open one edge of the bias tape, and pin to top edge only of Pot Holder Plus Pocket. Stitch just to the right of the unfolded crease.
- Trim away excess bias tape.
- Press bias tape to back of pot holder pocket.
- Use Clover’s Wonder Clips to hold bias tape in place! Sewing binding is the original use for Wonder Clips!
- Stitch binding in place with a Schmetz Needle, stitching “in the ditch” (where the binding meets the fabric). Or, stitch near the bias tape edge – and you’ll be sure to catch the back of the binding in your stitching line!
- Trim away excess bias tape. It was great to have the extra “handles” while stitching the bias tape to the pocket top!
- Layer pocket onto previously sewn pot holder. Wonder Clip edges together.
- Turn over pot holder, and add an optional 6″ ribbon hanging loop!
- Baste optional 6″ ribbon hanging loop to top of pot holder. Keep this loop out-of-the-way of all future stitching! Use Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl to hold loop in place.
- Baste pocket edges to pot holder.
- Tuck the hanging loop back behind the pot holder!
- Open folds of 1″ bias tape, and press under 1/4″ of bias binding short end.
- Pin or clip pressed under 1/4″ of bias binding to center of right front pot holder.
- Stitch just to the right of the unfolded crease. Using bias trim is the only way achieve the neatly sewn outer curved corners of the pot holder plus!
- Overlap the binding, and stitch through all layers, overlapping at least 4″ of bias tape.
- If you overlap and stitch less than 4″, you’ll have a gap in the bias trim when folded to the back side! Yikes!
- Cut away excess bias trim.
- Press bias tape to back of pot holder.
- Use Clover’s Wonder Clips to hold bias tape in place!
- Stitch bias binding in place with a Schmetz Needle, stitching “in the ditch” (where the binding meets the fabric). Or, stitch near the bias tape edge – and you’ll be sure to catch the back of the binding in your stitching line!
- Tadah!

I plan on making this project, but in a narrower profile to use in my car to hold my cell phone.
Lorraine Alves
The method for making binding is perfect. I have purchased the tools and have started to make binding of various widths.
Dawn Shaarda
I love those bias tae makers!
Carol Netzler
Love the pocket potholder. The binding accessory surely would be good for a no fail binding. You Sis’s look like you’re enjoying yourselves. Great!
Ann West
I just love using the bias binder to make bindings for my projects. Love the pot holder and the insert for goodies like recipes and cookies mixes for wonderful Christmas presents.
Cynthia
I hope to try this technique after the holidays! Love the potholder.
Beverly Smith
Binding is such a chore that anything that makes it easier is a blessing.
diane c
Hopefully this weekend — want to get the potholder done with as a soup ladle is one one Christmas list this year.
Dixie
I make all my bias tape bindings using the bias tape maker. They are a wonderful tool.
Linda Nelson
Yes, I would love to try these techniques…probably after the holidays!
Pat
I will be trying this clever idea for making bias binding. It seems you can never find pre-made tape in the right color. This looks easier on the finger tips than the old fold and hold technique we have all experienced. Thanks for the chance to win.
Charlotte Brown
After the Christmas rush is over, I would love to make several of these potholders.
Andrea Letourneau
I have the full set of the Clover Bias tape makers. I also have a set of “other” bias tape makers and the Clover ones win by a mile – the “other” bias tape makers sometimes allow the fabric to slip such that the bias tape isn’t folded evenly, but the Clover ones work like a charm.
Dottie
Hoping to find time to make these for my sister in law for Christmas. Great gifts for all through the year.
Clovis
I will be trying this binding method.
Simone P
Can’t wait to try this method–I’m making last minute gifts for daughter and daughters-in-law this weekend! Thanks!
Bev Wilson
Thanks for the tutorial! I will be trying these later today!
Rosie
I’m sure I will be using these bias tape makers. They work like a dream, and I enjoy making the bias tape with them.
Loreen Ridlon
I will be trying Nancys bias tape makers.
Beverly
I have purchased a few sizes of bias tape makers for other projects and love how easy they are to use. The potholder plus is such a cute gift idea!
Judy G
I love the color combination on the hot pads. So cute! I have used my set of bias tape makers on previous projects. They are a time saver.
Janet
I will be trying this method of binding potholders. It would be cute to make a matching apron. The bias tape maker looks easy to use. It’s time to teach this old dog a new trick. Thanks for the ideas.
Donna Fecteau
I will be trying out this method of bias tape I’d like to make a few of these up for presents. Thanks so much.
Carol
The pot holders are really nice and I may try this technique in 2020.
Gina Snyder
I think this potholder is really nice. Love it’s size! And yes, I will be trying Nancys binding!
Suzy C
I wish that I would have had the bias binder years ago. It looks like a time saver. But better late than never. It will be useful in the future since I make projects that require binding.
Donna
Can the potholder instructions be printed as a hard copy? I’m making 15 potholders from my Mom’s Jean’s for my family. Very interested in a printout of the instructions
Thanks.
