Sewing Secret Revealed! To make one Wine Tote appear to be two completely different totes, sew two outer pieces together using two different fabrics! (And, sew two inner pieces together using two different fabrics). We also call this our Color Blocked Wine Tote!
- Pin or Wonder Clip inner fabrics, right sides together, at top narrow edge (one each of two different fabrics).
- Pin or Wonder Clip outer fabrics, right sides together, at top narrow edge (one each of two different fabrics).
Or, to make a traditional Wine Tote, with coordinating outer fabric (and coordinating inner fabric), place like fabrics right sides together – just like with did in our Halloween Wine Tote Sewing Tutorial.
- Attach an Open Toe Presser Foot to sewing machine, and insert a new Schmetz Universal Sewing Machine Needle, Sz. 80.
- Stitch seams, along top narrow edges.
- Press seams open, using a Tailor’s Clapper – to flatten seams.
- Place wine tote sections right sides together, aligning opposing fabrics.
- Pin or Wonder Clip along curved edges.
- Stitch wine tote sections along curved edges, only!
- Using 45 mm Rotary Cutter, Pinking Blade, and Cutting Mat, trim seam allowances to approximately 1/4″ – along curved edges only.
Extend the life of the cutting mat, and cut on the “reverse side” of the mat – when rotary cutting with a pinking blade!
- Press seams open over a Tailor’s Clapper – to flatten seams.
- Attache Clip ‘n Glide Bodkin to lower corner of outer wine tote section, and turn right sides out.
- Press.
- Pin or Wonder Clip front and back sections together at sides.
- Press seams open, using a Tailor’s Clapper – to flatten seams.
- Turn right sides out. Press.
- Meet lower edges. Pin or Wonder Clip all four lower edge layers together.
- Using sewing machine, or serger, stitch all layers together – along lower edge.
Create Lower Gussets
- Fold lower corners meeting right sides together and matching lower seam to side seams.
- Mark a straight line at 1-1/2″ inside corner, as shown.
- Stitch along marked lines – using a Stilletto/Awl to assist feeding seams under presser foot.
Using an Open Toe Presser Foot makes it easy to stitch directly on the marked line!
- Optional: Create curved lower gusset seams by tracing a salad plate, marking curves at previously stitched lines, as shown.
- Stitch along curves lines.
Use The Big Jig behind and under presser foot, to keep presser foot level when sewing multiple layers!
- Trim lower seam allowances to 3/8″
- Serge or zigzag lower seam allowances.
- Turn right side out.
- Convert sewing machine to free arm sewing, and topstitch around curved handle seams.
- Our Color Blocked Valentine’s Day Wine Tote is complete!
Our Valentine’s Day Wine Tote holds one or two standard wine bottles, and also makes a great gift bag – with a built-in handle!

The randomly selected winner of a Stitch it! Sisters 5″ Fabric Short Stack with S!S button & sticker, from the January 21 Blog Post, Mini Room Makeover with a Modern Dresden Columns Quilt for Display on a Table or a Wall, is Karen L.
Her comment is: I am working on learning to machine quilt projects I have already pieced/appliqued. At the moment I am quilting a table runner to get some practice before jumping into a bigger quilt. I do love the runner in this tutorial and think my daughter would love to have it on her dining room table. 2021 Christmas present perhaps!
Happy Sewing!

Looks like I am the winner of the last give-away. How wonderful to have won something from NZ on a cold slightly snowy day! By the way, I love the red wine tote pattern in this posting. What a great way to give a gift of wine to someone you love. Thanks for everything you all do. Sure do miss Nancy Z.

And by the way, my favorite festive sewing projects are two fold. I like to make table runners because they are quicker to make in time for the holidays and most people will use them. Every year I make four new tree ornaments for my daughter’s family with hopes that when her boys eventually have their own homes and tree, they will already have some “made for them” ornaments to put on it.
Diane L Putzer
They are probably more practical than festive, but I make bowl potholders for friends and family and enjoy using festive fabrics when making them.
Rita Skraba
I love to make quilted and machine embroidered potholders and tea towels. I use seasonal fabric and give away as gifts to family and friends.
Livivua Chandler
I am in love with making pillows and aprons. I love personalizing them and putting on that extra touch for my friends and family. They love the ruffles.
Bonnye
.I purchased some lovely fabric to make pillows.
Dixie
I love making machine embroidered towels for gifts for my family.
Susan
It’s hard to pick just one festive project that I have sewed, but have made many decorative pillows and have done quilted seasonal wall hangings. Love the wine tote project!
Carolyn T
Previously purchased holiday and seasonal table runners will now be the alternates to those I’ve learned to make, thanks to your tutorials.
