Introducing the twelfth and final tutorial in our FREE! 2020 Nancy Zieman Productions Nancy’s Red Elegance Block of the Month Mystery Quilt Series! This month, we’re assembling and finishing – featuring the September, October and November Row Assemblies! If you haven’t already, finish stitching your September through November rows this month. Then, assemble all block rows – as detailed below in today’s blog posting.

In January, Team Nancy Zieman introduced the NEW! 2020 Nancy Zieman Productions Nancy’s Red Elegance Block of the Month Mystery Quilt Series. On the third Saturday of each month in 2020, we’ve featured one block design and/or tutorial, and we stitched one or more blocks of the same design each month. The blocks are created using Our NEW! Red Elegance Fabric Collection by Riley Blake and the Carefree Curves Trace ‘n Create Template Set by Nancy Zieman for Clover.
The wait is over! Today we’re sharing step-by-step how to assemble and finish the 2020 Nancy Zieman Productions Red Elegance Block of the Month Quilt – featuring the SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER & NOVEMBER Rows!
December – Assemble and Finish!
Quilt Assembly
This month we’re completing the quilt assembly! Gather all SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER and NOVEMBER Rows!
September – All Row Assemblies
October – All Row Assemblies
November – All Row Assemblies
Prepare your blocks rows for the block assembly process by pressing and starching with June Tailor’s Starch Savvy. Press and starch, press and starch.
December – Assemble and Finish!
- Layout rows, rotating rows, as shown.
Be sure to stitch the October, November, and December Row Assemblies using a scant 1/4″ seam allowance, and Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needles.
Stitch Rows
- Align row one and row two, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Align row three to quilt assembly, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Align row four to quilt assembly, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Align row five to quilt assembly, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Align row six to quilt assembly, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Align row seven to quilt assembly, right sides together, as shown:
- Pin. Stitch.
- Press seam flat, then press to one side.
- Layer quilt top, batting, and backing, and quilt as desired.
- Create quilt binding with 1 yd. block background and binding fabric: Red Elegance Tonal Brick, Red Elegance Textured Brick or Red Elegance Diamonds Brick.

I’m sorry, but this mystery block of the month is the ugliest quilt I have ever seen.. total waste of my money. And such pretty fabric! I’m going to donate the quilt top and keep the backing for another project. Sorry, you all are usually spot on, but this one’s a clunker.

The 2020 quilt mystery block of the month was a very creative use of beautiful fabrics showcased in blocks. Very inventive!

I’m sorry to have to say that I’m very disappointed with the final look. I was so excited when this fabric line was released – because red is my sister’s favorite color and I thought this quilt would make a great Christmas present. As the rows were coming together this fall I began to feel my disappointment growing and now that it’s finished I don’t even want to give it to her. The. center three rows are fairly cohesive but the rest looks completely disjointed. And why were we instructed to buy 3 additional 1-yard fabrics? I used a tiny bit of only one. I did learn valuable skills regarding appliqué, but I also learned – No more “Mystery” block of month for me. I never would have started this one of I’d known the end result. This was a lot of time and money I could have invested in something else. The 2019 quilt, my first BOM, was beautiful. 2020’s was a big miss.
