Preshrink fabrics and fabric panel by steaming and pressing, and steaming and pressing a second time, and then spray press and starch fabric with June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch Savvy— press and starch, press and starch.
Prepare Merry Little Christmas Tree Skirt
- Using June Tailor’s Eze-View Pressing Cloth, press and fuse Pellon White Easy-Knit Interfacing to wrong side of Merry Little Christmas Tree Skirt Fabric Panel – following manufacturer’s instructions.
- Cut out Tree Skirt Fabric Panel along outer printed line.
Cut Fabric and Batting
- Place Tree Skirt Fabric Panel to Cream Cotton Shades Wide Backing Fabric, right sides together.
- Using Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Rotary Cutting Ruler cut Backing Fabric same size as round-cut Tree Skirt Fabric Panel.
- Using Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Rotary Cutting Ruler cut one straight radius seam line between outer circle and inner printed circle.
- Trim away inner circle fabric along printed line.
- Set aside.
Optional: For a loftier quilted tree skirt, add one layer Pellon Nature’s Touch Batting – behind backing fabric – prior to cutting out layers!
Create Jumbo Piping
- Cut 172″ of 2-5/8″ bias fabric strips from Merry Little Christmas Candy Green Fabric.
- Meet short ends of bias fabric strips, right sides together, offsetting each seam end 1/4″.
- Stitch short ends with 1/4″ seams.
- Chain stitch from one strip to the next, and create one approximately 172″ continuous bias strip.
- Clip chain-stitched threads between strips.
- Press seams flat, then press to one side.
- Place Wrap ‘N Fuse Piping to wrong side of bias strip – aligning long cut edges, and placing piping 5/8″ from short fabric end.
- “Wrap” bias fabric strip around Wrap ‘N Fuse Piping.
- Set iron to low/medium temperature on dry setting.
- Press fabric edges (seam allowance), pressing for ten seconds. Note: No need to press cording.
Create piping in minutes—simply wrap Wrap ‘N Fuse Piping with fabric, press to fuse, and you have instant piping! Fusing-basting fabric around cording to create piping saves valuable time! It’s a no-hassle way of creating a tasteful accent.
- Attach Zipper Sewing Machine Presser Foot to sewing machine.
- Align long cut edges of piping with outer cut edge of Tree Skirt Fabric Panel, placing piping short cut edge at Tree Skirt Fabric Panel radius seam edge.
- Move sewing machine needle position to left opening on Zipper Foot.
- Stitch piping to entire outer edge of Tree Skirt Fabric Panel, stopping stitching at about 6″ from seam end.
- Open end of piping and trim away extra piping cording – about 5/8″ inside Tree Skirt cut edge.
- Re-wrap fabric strip around piping cording, and continue stitching piping to entire outer edge of Tree Skirt Fabric Panel.
- Place Tree Skirt Fabric Panel and Fabric Backing right sides together. Pin or Wonder Clip around all edges.
If you’ve opted to include a layer of batting – place batting behind backing fabric – prior to pinning/clipping layers!
- Stitch around Tree Skirt radius straight cut seams, pivot at corners, and continue stitching around entire outside Tree Skirt Fabric Panel.
- NOTE: Do not stitch around inner center circle!
When approaching bulky piping seams, use The Big Jig behind and/or under presser foot – to stitch beyond the bulk of the seam!
- Trim corners, then grade curved seams using a 45 mm Rotary Cutter with Pinking Blade.
- Turn Tree Skirt right side out through inner center circle opening.
- After turning Tree Skirt right side out, attached standard presser foot, and baste around inner center circle, through all layers, at a scant 1/4″ from cut edge.
Prepare Center Binding/Ties
- Cut 72″ of 1-7/8″ bias fabric strips from Merry Little Christmas Candy Green Fabric.
- Stitch bias fabric strips together and create one approx. 72″ continuous bias strip.
- Press seams flat, then press seams open.
- Place 1-7/8″ bias fabric strip through 1″ Bias Tape Maker. Use a Stiletto Awl to advance fabric strip through bias tape maker.
- Press fold fabric strip, while advancing fabric through Bias Tape Maker.
- Straight-cut both bias fabric strip short ends.
- Open both pressed fabric strip ends and press under 5/8″ along each short end.
- Refold pressed fabric strip, fold a second time – meeting long folded edges. Press.
- Measure in 18″ from one bias fabric strip end.
- Open folded fabric strip and place a marked line at 18″ from one strip end.
- Place opened bias fabric strip to tree skirt center, meeting cut edges right sides together, and aligning marked line to Tree Skirt radius seam edge.
- Attach Open Toe Sewing Machine Presser Foot to sewing machine.
- Stitch bias cut strip to tree skirt center circle edge, with scant 1/4″ seam.
- Refold bias fabric strip and press to Tree Skirt wrong side.
- Wonder Clip bias fabric strip to Tree Skirt and along bias fabric strip ties.
- Edgestitch folded bias fabric strip along long open seam edge.
When edgestitching folded bias fabric strip, first begin stitching on an anchor cloth (folded fabric scrap). Stitch directly from the anchor cloth onto bias fabric strip, without cutting threads!
- Continue stitching entire length of bias fabric strip/ties.
Optional: Add straight line machine quilting accents with The Ultimate Quilt ‘N Stitch Presser Foot! Giveaway, below!
