Construct Mug Rug
All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.
Each Mug Rug will require: Four fabric squares cut 4″ x 4″, Two interfacing squares cut 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2″, and One fleece square cut 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2“
Cut Fabrics:
- Cut four squares each measuring 4″ x 4″ from fabric.
- Cut one square of fabric 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2″ for the back.
- Cut one square 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2″ from the fleece and two same-sized squares from the interfacing.
Construction:
- Use Clover’s 6-in-1 Stick ‘n Stitch Guide to mark 1/4″ seam allowances.
- Use a Frixion Marking Pen and the Circle Making Feature on Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to trace to a 6″ circle onto the stacked fabrics.
Create the top of the mug rug, layer pieces in this order:
- Place fleece, adhesive side down
- Sewn Four-Patch, right side up
- Interfacing, adhesive side up
- For the mug rug back, layer pieces in this order:
- 7-1/2″ fabric square, right side up
- Interfacing square, adhesive side up
- Stitch directly on the marked lines of both the top and bottom sets.
- Using a pinking rotary cutting blade, trim excess fabric 1/8″ past the stitching line , on both top and bottom pieces.
- Use scissors to trim away excess interfacing, leaving 1″ of interfacing.
- Turn the interfacing to the wrong side.
- Carefully, smooth the circle edges with the turner.

- Layer the two circles, wrong sides together.
- Press.
- Position and set the seam guide to allow you to stitch a consistent edgestitch around the circle.
- Stitch in the ditch, sewing along the seams. If needed, use a fabric scrap to start the stitching onto the mug rug. Cut away extra fabric when stitching is complete.

Favorite treat flavor would definitely be chocolate over mint any day! Love the look of the peppermint mug rugs.
Vickie Townsend
Sorry, but it would be chocolate and mint together!! Thanks for the mug rug tutorial.
Linda Seaberg
I love mint—in tea, candy canes, fresh as a garnish, I plan to try the Hot Cocoa recipe soon.
Hazel Davidson
I love chocolate and mint as a combo but solo my pick is chocolate. The mug rugs are ;very festive and add cheer to any drink.
Gradene Gerbert
I love both but prefer mint for flavoring. Thanks for the tutorial.
