Replacing a broken zipper, mending jeans, sewing on buttons—these clothing repair tasks sometimes get a 2-thumbs down rating in the topic of sewing entertainment! Clothing repairs are important, but they don’t have to be difficult.

In this 2-part Sewing With Nancy series, Nancy takes a lighter approach to fixing what’s broken, while breaking most sewing rules.

You’ll find five common mending repairs in the second episode of Quick Stitch to Wear Again, on Sewing With NancyWatch online, on Public TV, or on DVD. Or, follow all the details in the book. Here’s what you’ll learn!

Cutaway-Zipper Remedy

The Cutaway-Zipper Remedy is our prescription for replacing a broken zipper in a jacket or coat. Unlike traditional solutions, this zipper cure does not involve opening seams.

I have done the Cutaway Zipper technique several times, one of them on a reversible jacket. Very clever to do. Sometimes when I stitch the second row I use a zigzag or decorative stitch.

One time I did not have double sided tape so I just stitched the ribbon onto the zipper and inside it showed a third row of stitching, which no one saw anyway.

The zipper cover-up repair is the slickest repair tip I have ever seen. I solves the problem of replacing zippers in jackets and pants with flies where otherwise the garment needs to be taken apart to replace the zipper. This tip is clearly worth hours of saved time (and frustration)!

I used the cutaway zipper remedy on 2 jackets so far. I used to throw away the jackets when they came home with broken zippers, but not anymore. I know I would be able to use many of the ideas in Nancy’s book.

Though I’ve been sewing for over 50 years, I never knew the ‘trick’ about sewing on a button over a toothpick/stir stick! It makes a lot of sense, especially wrapping the shank before tying the knot at the end. Of course, learning the new techniques for replacing zippers was fabulous, as well. What a blessing that we all can still learn from Nancy even after her passing!

I really needed the Jacket zipper cut away tip. I’ve had a winter jacket laying around for about 3-4 years because it needed the zipper replaced. I’ve had the zipper that long too but just didn’t do anything about it because I so hated the idea of taking it apart and trying to get it all back together without it looking a mess. Now I’ll have that favorite coat again.
