- 1/2 yd. each Two Colors – Stretch Jersey Knit Fabric (makes three Colorblocked Turtleneck Scarves)
- Clover’s I Sew For Fun Spring Tape Measure
- Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge
- Clover’s I Sew For Fun Heart-Shaped Pins
- Optional: Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape
- June Tailor’s Starch Savvy
- Schmetz Size 80/12 Jersey Chrome Sewing Machine Needles
- Iron
Choose Your Colorblocked Turtleneck Scarf Size
Using a tape measure, measure forehead circumference – just above eyebrows: If forehead circumference measures 20-1/2″- 21-1/2″ make a size Small or Medium Turtleneck Scarf. If forehead circumference measures 21-1/2″-22-1/2″ make a size Medium/Large Turtleneck Scarf. We’re making a size Small/Medium Turtleneck Scarf in this sewing tutorial.
Prepare & Cut Fabric
Prepare your fabrics! Pre-treat fabric by steaming and pressing, then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with June Tailor’s Starch Savvy. Press and starch, press and starch.
- Cut Two Fabric Rectangles 18″ long by 11″ wide for size Small/Medium. Be sure to cut the fabric rectangle with the greatest fabric stretch across the 11″ width. (For a Size Medium/Large, cut one fabric rectangles 18″ long by 12″ wide: for a 10-1/2″ wide x 8-1/2 long finished scarf).
- NOTE: Deanna, from Team NZP, stitched a Colorblocked Turtleneck Scarf for her husband – with Two Fabric Rectangle measuring 22-1/2″ long by 13-1/2″ wide – cut from 5/8 yd Stretch Jersey Knit Fabric. Be a designer and choose your own custom fabric rectangle sizes!
Stitch Turtleneck Scarf
- Place fabric rectangles, right sides together, meeting 18″ long edges. Pin.
- Stitch seam with a serger, or stitch with a sewing machine set for a wobble stitch.
Set sewing machine for a “wobble-stitch”: Choose a slight zigzag (2.0-2.5 length and .5 width). On the outside, this stitch will give the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam! Or, choose a 4-thread overlock serger stitch. Now’s the perfect time to use that serger!
- Stitch or serge seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, or use the edge of your presser foot as a guide. Be sure to backstitch at seam beginning and ending. For extra durability during wear–stitch this seam again, stitching over original stitching line. No need to double stitch this seam if you’re stitching with a serger!
- Fold stitched fabric rectangle, right sides together, meeting 21″ long edges. Pin.
- Measure down 3″-4″ at one side, and fuse a 3″-4″ strip of Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape along fabric edge – within the seam allowance.
Placing the fusible web tape, within the seam marks the seam opening and later finishes the final seam!
- Stitch seam with a serger, or stitch with a sewing machine set for a wobble stitch – creating a fabric tube. Press seam flat, then press open or press to one side.
- Fold fabric tube, right sides together, stacking and aligning stitched seam. Pin.
- Stitch or serge seam leaving a 3″-4″ opening at the fusible web tape.
- Turn Scarf right side out through seam opening.
Before moving on to the finishing step, go ahead and try on your scarf-in-process. Slip scarf over head and check for your desired fit. If scarf is too loose, turn inside out and restitch seam (above) taking a deeper seam allowance.- Remove paper backing from Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape and fuse/press seam closed. And/Or using a hand sewing needle and thread, hand stitch seam opening closed.

I think I would want to make three of these: one navy and gray, one lime and gray, and one red and gray. That should cover color-wise any that I might want to use. The one thing I have discovered is that in the winter I hate not having something around my neck. When walking in the cold, that cold air goes right down my neck and chills the whole body. This should solve that problem!

If I was going to make the color-block scarf I’d either have to do the obligatory black and gold (for the Steelers, Pirates & Penguins) or my favorite color: purple…with some other neutral color – probably a light gray or white. I do like the idea of this scarf. I have used a fleece neck gater in the winter for years.They are sold in ski shops.

I absolutely love this idea and I know my son would love it too because he is a pizza delivery driver and it would be easy to pull down or take off and put back on without being hard to use. It would also keep him from getting sore ears. Thank you so much and I would love to win the needles. I could even embroider the company name of the pizza place he works for as they are a mom & pop service…love it.

I like the Grey amd Navy, but with my white-around-the-face hair I think I would go for the Grey and Aqua. The Navy is very stark against my pale complexion and white hair. Color blocking comes in handy when we want to be very practical and some day when we can travel again.
