Bean Bags/Cornhole Bags/Bean Bag Sewing Tutorial
With the sewing tutorial, below, you’ll be able to create regulation-size bags as set by the American Cornhole Organization. If you’re going to play the game, you’d better be official 🙂
Bean Bags/Cornhole Bags/Bean Bag Sewing Tutorial Supplies Listing
- 1/4 yard each of two or more Cotton Canvas Fabric Colors
- Quality feed corn, 15 oz. for each corn bag (or use 15 oz. dried beans)
- Clover’s 5-1/8″ Bordeaux Ultimate Scissors
- Clover’s Flower Head Pins
- Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge or Clover’s Hot Ruler
- Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner
- Clover’s Wonder Clips
- Clover’s Hand-Sewing Needles with Heart-Shaped Case
- 45 mm Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Rotary Cutting Ruler
- Zipper foot
- Schmetz Denim Needle Sz. 90
- Iron
- Optional: NEW! Totally Tubular Pressing Station by dime
Create
- For each bag, using a rotary cuter, cut two squares of canvas fabric 7″ x 7″.
- Use the Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge or Clover’s Hot Ruler to measure a 1/2″ hem on one edge of each square.
- Press hem toward inside of square, prior to stitching edges.
- Match right sides and use a 1/2″ seam allowance to stitch one edge of the square using a Schmetz Denim Needle.
- Stitch seams twice, or choose a double-stitch decorative built-in stitch on your sewing machine.
- “Wrap” the corners: Fold Canvas Fabric along the stitching line – at corner; pin.
- Stitch seam starting at fold, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Fold seam along stitching line and sew the remaining seam, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Press canvas bag envelope around a sleeve board, or with the Totally Tubular Pressing Station by dime.
- Press seam allowances open along top edge.
- Using a scissors, grade seam allowances, removing a small rectangles of fabric within the seam allowance. This helps reduce bulk within the seams.
- Refold top 1/2″ pressed seam allowance.
- Press again.

- Turn canvas bag right side out.
- Use Clover’sPoint 2 Point Turner to push out the corners.
- Press.
- Fill canvas bag with 15 oz. of corn.
- Pin pressed top folded edges, placingpins parallel to the fold.
- Optional: Use a hand sewing needle to sew a long basting stitch along the top edge, to hold the corn in place when you move to the sewing machine.
- Attach a Zipper Foot to your sewing machine.
- Carefully sew the opening closed; removing pins as you stitch.
- Optional: Use Clover’s Wonder Clips at this step for ease of pinning.
- Use an anchor cloth (fabric scrap) to stitch the final seam. Reverse stitch on the fabric to secure the seam. Be sure to double stitch this seam! Then, clip away the anchor cloth.
- What a great project combining sewing and family outdoor game time!
