It’s Great Fun to Sew Handbags!

How to sew handbags by Nancy ZiemanI know, you’re never going to sew five handbags from the same fabric collection. Yet, I thought you might be interested to see how prints and solids combine to create classy bags and totes.

First, the Fabric!

We received fabric yardage from the new collections at Riley Blake Designs. It was like Christmas! How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman At first I selected fabrics from the many color ways, then I decided to go with a one color scheme. Navy and Chartreuse are a fresh, winning combo. Keep in mind that the market is one season ahead of the actual time of year, so spring is what we’re thinking about! How to sew handbags by Nancy ZiemanThen, my staff and I auditioned fabrics for the various styles, choosing larger prints for the bigger bags—the obvious choice.

Easy-to-Sew Bags and Tote Templates

Nancy’s Hobo Tote

How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman There are two templates in the Hobo Tote collection. Great for fat-quarters or a fabric duo, this is my go-to BIG bag. For traveling to and from work, the studio, or errands around town, this bag holds a lot.

We auditioned a variety of ribbons to accent the horizontal seams. Not finding one ribbon that we liked, a narrow ribbon was stacked on top of a wider ribbon and stitched. Presto, the ideal accent.

How to sew handbags by Nancy ZiemanTown & Country Bag

How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman This was one of the first handbag templates that I designed for Clover in ’08. Since then I learned to add a layer of Peltex as an underlining to give the bag shape. The sew-in Peltex, a craft interfacing, is something that we use in almost all of our bags. It wasn’t available 6-years ago (or I didn’t know about it) and the addition of that interfacing has made a world of difference in the appearance of my handbags.

Town & Country Templates by Nancy Zieman with Clover

Since Peltex is stiff, I recommend trimming out the dart and zigzagging the edges or legs of the dart together with a wide zigzag. /Users/nancyzieman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2014/09/26/20140926-110030/IMG_7086.JPG /Users/nancyzieman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2014/09/26/20140926-110030/IMG_7087.JPG /Users/nancyzieman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2014/09/26/20140926-110030/IMG_7088.JPG /Users/nancyzieman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2014/09/26/20140926-110030/IMG_7089.JPG How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman Then, spread the seam apart. The zigzag stitch spreads apart and the Peltex lies flat. Machine baste this interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric and proceed. How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman Important Note: We fuse interfacing to the wrong side of all cotton fabrics, and we add a layer of Peltex to each and every bag. Take a quick peak inside the bag! We used light, fun fabrics for the lining. How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman

The Florida Tote

How to sew handbags by Nancy ZiemanI like this size tote, because it is also a great handbag size. With pockets on the outside and inside, it’s roomy and convenient to carry.

Florida Tote Templates by Nancy Zieman with Clover

The seams are accented with Wrap ‘n Fuse Piping. How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman Your iron does most of the work. All you need to do is wrap fabric around the piping and press. The fusible web casing around the cording eliminates the first sewing step. Convenient! How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman

The City Bag

How to sew handbags by Nancy Zieman The City Bag is the second of the original bags that I designed for Clover and the favorite of many. After it was finished it needed a focal point. Stacked buttons to the rescue.

Love the Nancy Hobo Tote. The stacked ribbon on it is a great detail and I love the circle cut out. And two thanks-one for the tip on the interfacing Peltex and the other on the use of the Riley Blake fabrics. Wow-love how you put the fabrics together from this collection.

    The California Bag

  • M.R.Beat
    October 4, 2014

Love the California clutch pattern, but I added a pocket to the lower half, outside surface. I need to get to my cell phone quickly, so a tight-fitting pocket the same size as the lower half, minus 3/4″ at top edge, holds my cell phone securely. From outside the pocket, I push the phone up in order to grab the rim without stretching the pocket. The fabric pattern matches the base pattern; no one notices the pocket initially.

Florida tote first. City Bag second.
I am tired of buying designer bags that look like everyone else’s bags. This way I can have a wonderful designed bag, with the fabric of my choice and add personal “designer” touches of my own. With your bag templates I will be the envy of my friends.

Truthfully, I love all the bags. But my personal favorite is the town and country. It is different and I like to wear different things. I also have trouble keeping double shoulder straps on my shoulder. I love the one strap. I also like the shape of the bag. I would love to have any but Town & Country is my choice.

Thanks for the added tips about the ribbons and the stacked buttons. I have seen you use them before. I made the E-tablet recently. I have the original template. My tablet was about 2″ smaller than the small, but I was able to reduce the size down to fit. All about “Rectangles and Squares” :-). Fun project. I think I will try one of these bags. Love the fabric you use!!

    October 4, 2014

hi, Nancy, I changed my email but not my teacher. As I read about the craft product we now use to line out totes and bags, I remembered the evening bag I made, with you in mind. literally. My go to phrase was “what would Nancy do?” I was there when you came on PBS decades ago. I remember we rented your VCR tapes and watched it every “Group Nite” and then returned it. You must have thought we were just one of the rent once, buy once, call in once. But it wasn’t. We put our orders together under one name, or rented or called. We were your “have to sew” because we were poor. I saved up 2 yrs to buy a $600.00 VCR, so my dad could record you and my soap operas and then I would carry the whole machine to my home (duplex) and back before work the next morning. anyway, back to the purse. I got invited to a swanky hospital dinner, invites only, and had a month to make everything but the shoes. Yep, an evening envelope bag out of the black velvet for my winter dress-up. It took 2 weeks to figure out how to make it stiff. No amount of coffee filters made it stiff enough wo bulk and then there was shoe boxes, they bent too easy and multiples didnt feel right. CARDBOARD BOXES yah, too thick. unless, wrapped in towels and run over it. left bumps. too homemade. roll the cardboard box strips with a rolling pin first so the bumps all went in one direction, still some bumps. Now run over it. Dad drove while I placed the towel wrapped cardboard just so, all in one direction from being rolled with the rolling pin and check, hummm, one more time. Perfect. the towels? not so much. good think I used old ones (I would save for other purses) and I thought again. “Now what would Nancy do?” I peeled a paper thin layer of quilt batting, wrapped the cut boards and hand finished the the bags edges, the black shoe lace that closed over the rhinestone broach mom had and you and I attended the swanky Christmas party. We had fun. We got so many compliments and yes, I told the truth. I made my dress and bag with my friend Nancy’s help. I found the velvet scraps and a small rolled card board in my memory envelope from that decade just last week. I am glad there is an easier way to line bags now. lol I still keep coffee filters as light, firm lining for memory envelopes, etc., and I have collected almost a dozen of your books (gosh, had to save up for those too) right by the sewing machine. Like half the world, Nancy, you are still my best sewing friend, teacher and inspiration. Thanks for the memories and the years (and the shoulder pads we made together, zig zag the edges they lay nicer). Bye for now, Linda

I think the Florida tote would be my pick. I just got some new heavier fabric in a pink and orange print that I think would look great as this bag and I can see orange handles and lining and pink piping. I like the stacked ribbons and might try this on the right side of the handles.

I’ve been thinking of trying one of these templates for a while now. I think I’d like to begin with the Florida tote, it looks the perfect size.
I’ve never been a fan of chartreuse before but, wow, these bags are super cute!

California Bag – I like small bags because you cannot put a lot in them. This creates less stress on your back and shoulders. I have back problems but not because of carrying around a large purse. You really don’t need alll that stuff – do you?

    October 5, 2014

Nancy, they’re all really nice, but the Florida Tote would work best for me. All those pockets keep me organized so that I can find what I need, especially when driving. If I keep sunglasses, phone, etc. in dedicated pockets it’s easy to pull what I need without taking my eyes off the road. Have a great week!

    October 5, 2014

How can I possibly choose just one? I love all of them and I’m so glad to see them done in fresh colors and exciting fabrics! This post has made me WANT to make them, whereas the pictures on your website are, to me, not as inspiring….sorry, Nancy. So, if I MUST choose one….this is so hard because I adore tote bags, but I’d say the City Bag wins my heart today. Thanks for the great post and opportunity, Nancy!

California Bag gets my vote. I am now using a belt bag (aka fanny pack) almost everywhere I go — but mostly I don’t wear it, just carry it by the belt or wrap, wrap, wrap it around my wrist. The size & wristlet strap of the California Bag would make it the perfect substitute. Its expandable feature is appealing, too, for those times I need to carry something more than the basics. (Love the big bags, too, but NEED the smaller one right now!)

I love the Florida bag! I think it could easily double as a diaper bag.

    October 5, 2014

I like the Town and Country Bag, but I would have used the same ribbon trim as the one you used on the Hobo Tote for its handle underside — echoing the polka dot fabric.
