It’s Great Fun to Sew Handbags!
I know, you’re never going to sew five handbags from the same fabric collection. Yet, I thought you might be interested to see how prints and solids combine to create classy bags and totes.
First, the Fabric!
We received fabric yardage from the new collections at Riley Blake Designs. It was like Christmas! At first I selected fabrics from the many color ways, then I decided to go with a one color scheme. Navy and Chartreuse are a fresh, winning combo. Keep in mind that the market is one season ahead of the actual time of year, so spring is what we’re thinking about! Then, my staff and I auditioned fabrics for the various styles, choosing larger prints for the bigger bags—the obvious choice.
Easy-to-Sew Bags and Tote Templates
Nancy’s Hobo Tote
There are two templates in the Hobo Tote collection. Great for fat-quarters or a fabric duo, this is my go-to BIG bag. For traveling to and from work, the studio, or errands around town, this bag holds a lot.
We auditioned a variety of ribbons to accent the horizontal seams. Not finding one ribbon that we liked, a narrow ribbon was stacked on top of a wider ribbon and stitched. Presto, the ideal accent.
Town & Country Bag
This was one of the first handbag templates that I designed for Clover in ’08. Since then I learned to add a layer of Peltex as an underlining to give the bag shape. The sew-in Peltex, a craft interfacing, is something that we use in almost all of our bags. It wasn’t available 6-years ago (or I didn’t know about it) and the addition of that interfacing has made a world of difference in the appearance of my handbags.
Since Peltex is stiff, I recommend trimming out the dart and zigzagging the edges or legs of the dart together with a wide zigzag. Then, spread the seam apart. The zigzag stitch spreads apart and the Peltex lies flat. Machine baste this interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric and proceed. Important Note: We fuse interfacing to the wrong side of all cotton fabrics, and we add a layer of Peltex to each and every bag. Take a quick peak inside the bag! We used light, fun fabrics for the lining.
The Florida Tote
I like this size tote, because it is also a great handbag size. With pockets on the outside and inside, it’s roomy and convenient to carry.
The seams are accented with Wrap ‘n Fuse Piping. Your iron does most of the work. All you need to do is wrap fabric around the piping and press. The fusible web casing around the cording eliminates the first sewing step. Convenient!
The City Bag
The City Bag is the second of the original bags that I designed for Clover and the favorite of many. After it was finished it needed a focal point. Stacked buttons to the rescue.
Dress Your E-tablets in Style
Using fat quarter cuts of fabric or leftovers from your bag project, create a coordinating tablet keeper for your iPad, Kindle Fire, or any of the other e-readers. The original Trace ‘n Create Tablet Keeper Template set is your choice for an iPad, iPad mini, the original Kindle, and a host of other tablets. To find out which tablets fit the template set, click here. If you haven’t made a tablet keeper, we have lots of online instructions to guide you through the process. After I designed the tablet keeper, we were all introduced to the Kindle Fire, Nook, and a host of other e-readers/tablets that were different sizes. So, Trace ‘n Create tablet Keeper 2.0 was born! Click here to find the listing of all the e-readers that will fit these Trace ‘n Create tablet Keepers.

They are all neat; however the Florida bag is “me”. It’s traditional, functional, and can easily be individualized to fit anybody’s personality using novelty fabrics. I am a US Marine and Texas A&M mama, so my fabrics would make an adorable tote that represents who I am.
Fran Wiestf
I think the Hobo Tote is my favorite, the shape is more unique than most tote bags, and it makes a fantastic statement in your blue and chartreuse. I am a novice bag maker and would love to win this template, Thanks

Diane C
The California Bag
M.R.Beat
Love the California clutch pattern, but I added a pocket to the lower half, outside surface. I need to get to my cell phone quickly, so a tight-fitting pocket the same size as the lower half, minus 3/4″ at top edge, holds my cell phone securely. From outside the pocket, I push the phone up in order to grab the rim without stretching the pocket. The fabric pattern matches the base pattern; no one notices the pocket initially.
Dee
The Florida Tote – especially love the fabric!
Jody
The Hobo Tote definitely. Can really see myself using that one a lot. Stylish but functional. Love it!
Sharon Lichter

The Florida tote….would work best to carry my “teacher stuff” back and forth from school. 🙂
Annemarie
I really like the Florida bag and sincerely hope it is large enough to hold the e-reader/tablet as well. How much fun to coordinate those two!! Best of allI like this blog because it opened my eyes to other ways to attack my stash—especially some of the fabrics I deem “too good to cut” or ” I haven’t found a pattern worthy of this fabric”. Every blog=an education! Nancy you’re so sensible!
Gina

Mary Jo Weber
The Florida Tote is my favorite but they all look great in the fabrics you have chosen.
kayleen

Look at The Florida Bag go!! Definitely my choice too! Why? Cause it will hold everything and there is no reason to change purses. It holds the cell phone on the front pocket (you can’t go without the cell)…. Oh, yea, that Tablet Keeper would definitely be inside.
Kathleen
Love the City Bag!
Nadine W
Love the Florida Tote. The Peltex tip is great and I will use it. Need to make some bags now that you have inspired me. Thanks for the chance to win.
Elizabeth_T
I really like the lines of the Hobo Tote.
Jane Jarvis
The city bag. It was a hard decision. I have always wanted to make Nancy’s bags.
venita abel
I really like the Town & Country Bag. It is very sleek & stylish. I love your choice of fabric & colors.
becky
Florida tote first. City Bag second.
I am tired of buying designer bags that look like everyone else’s bags. This way I can have a wonderful designed bag, with the fabric of my choice and add personal “designer” touches of my own. With your bag templates I will be the envy of my friends.
Peggy
My favorite is the Florida Tote. Love all of the pockets and the outside design with the piping to dress it up.
Elaine Bilk
The Florida tote. It looks sophisticated and the clean lines can take you anywhere.
Hilda Magilow
Truthfully, I love all the bags. But my personal favorite is the town and country. It is different and I like to wear different things. I also have trouble keeping double shoulder straps on my shoulder. I love the one strap. I also like the shape of the bag. I would love to have any but Town & Country is my choice.
Jessy Rushing
Love the Hobo Tote! Room for all my junk, er, essentials!
Diane Q
If I had to pick one, it would be the hobo bag–a simple style yet looks roomy to hold all my stuff.
Gabriele Molina
Hard to choose. All patterns are winners, but the Hobo bag is my absolute favorite. I see endless options for fabric combinations and styling possibilities with this bag and in my case bigger is better when it comes to the size of a purse.
Christina Gonzalez
The City Bag is my favorite. It is a medium size handbag perfect for everyday use.
Sue
The Town & Country is my favorite. City Bag would be a close second.
Linda Bridges
Thanks for the added tips about the ribbons and the stacked buttons. I have seen you use them before. I made the E-tablet recently. I have the original template. My tablet was about 2″ smaller than the small, but I was able to reduce the size down to fit. All about “Rectangles and Squares” :-). Fun project. I think I will try one of these bags. Love the fabric you use!!
Eleanor
The Florida tote is my choice. I have made a few simple bags and would like to try this one. I have just discovered your website and truly enjoy it.

Hi Nancy, I love all the handbags, but I think I love the City Bag the best. The style is so great with the tab and the cut corners on the top, I would make some in all different colors.
Clara
Decisions, decisions…..Oh My! So hard to choose as they are all very pretty and functional. My favorites would be the Florida, Hobo and City Bag in that order. The others are not large enough to hold all the things I carry, however, I do like them.
Thank you Nancy for all you do to make our sewing fun.
Catherine Crowley
I like the City Bag. It’s the Goldilocks bag, not too big, not to small, just right.

Barbara
The Florida bag would be my first choice. Very versatile looking.
Glenda Taylor
Wow, it’s difficult to choose just one – they’re all so cute and the fabric selections are perfect. I’ve made many purses and totes – never can have too many!
Pamela Hansen
I cannot choose just one! But I would probably start with the California bag. Smaller bags are nice for a quick run to the store, or going to work when I don’t need all my “extras.” But I have to add – I LOVE the entire color range of that fabric! Nice eye candy!
Liane
I like The Town & Country Bag, because of de rounding and the long belt. And because he is not to deep, you can find everything :).

linda wolfe
hi, Nancy, I changed my email but not my teacher. As I read about the craft product we now use to line out totes and bags, I remembered the evening bag I made, with you in mind. literally. My go to phrase was “what would Nancy do?” I was there when you came on PBS decades ago. I remember we rented your VCR tapes and watched it every “Group Nite” and then returned it. You must have thought we were just one of the rent once, buy once, call in once. But it wasn’t. We put our orders together under one name, or rented or called. We were your “have to sew” because we were poor. I saved up 2 yrs to buy a $600.00 VCR, so my dad could record you and my soap operas and then I would carry the whole machine to my home (duplex) and back before work the next morning. anyway, back to the purse. I got invited to a swanky hospital dinner, invites only, and had a month to make everything but the shoes. Yep, an evening envelope bag out of the black velvet for my winter dress-up. It took 2 weeks to figure out how to make it stiff. No amount of coffee filters made it stiff enough wo bulk and then there was shoe boxes, they bent too easy and multiples didnt feel right. CARDBOARD BOXES yah, too thick. unless, wrapped in towels and run over it. left bumps. too homemade. roll the cardboard box strips with a rolling pin first so the bumps all went in one direction, still some bumps. Now run over it. Dad drove while I placed the towel wrapped cardboard just so, all in one direction from being rolled with the rolling pin and check, hummm, one more time. Perfect. the towels? not so much. good think I used old ones (I would save for other purses) and I thought again. “Now what would Nancy do?” I peeled a paper thin layer of quilt batting, wrapped the cut boards and hand finished the the bags edges, the black shoe lace that closed over the rhinestone broach mom had and you and I attended the swanky Christmas party. We had fun. We got so many compliments and yes, I told the truth. I made my dress and bag with my friend Nancy’s help. I found the velvet scraps and a small rolled card board in my memory envelope from that decade just last week. I am glad there is an easier way to line bags now. lol I still keep coffee filters as light, firm lining for memory envelopes, etc., and I have collected almost a dozen of your books (gosh, had to save up for those too) right by the sewing machine. Like half the world, Nancy, you are still my best sewing friend, teacher and inspiration. Thanks for the memories and the years (and the shoulder pads we made together, zig zag the edges they lay nicer). Bye for now, Linda
Doris
I carry magazines or ufo’s to the dr’s office so I can read my quilt books while I wait. The city bag would be my pick because it looks like it would hold my mag’s or book and still look classy.
Jeanette Beier
The Florida Tote. I usually end up carrying around everything but the kitchen sink.
Barbara R.
The Florida totte!
Rosemary
LOVE the fabrics you selected. Can’t wait to get my hands on them as they are perfect for my Spanish Revival home that we are renovating. That tablet case is my “fave” because I just got a “hand-me-up” phone and I am badly in need of a case-it would be perfect!
Sue W
Would love to make the Florida tote.

The Florida Tote is at the very top of my list, although they are all tempting. I can imagine each and everyone having a place of honor (and use) in my “handbag wardrobe”. I would really love to sin this inspiring “giveaway”. Maybe I’ll be lucky?

I just love them all, but the most versatile for me is the Town and Country bag. It’s one to use everyday. Love those colors you chose.
Brenda
I love the Florida bag. It’s definitely my style — roomy to carry snacks and fun things for our grandkids and I love the outside pockets for keys, candy (since I LOVE SWEET THINGS), and a comb or hair accessories on the go. I love all the larger handbags, but especially this style…
Kathleen Gold
Love the Florida tote, it is a perfect size
Margaret Hartman
I would love the make several of these bags, especially the Florida Tote, the Town & Country Bag and the City Bag. I love making handbags of different styles.

Sheri Fowler

Jerri Baker
I have made a couple of jean purses, & bag. But not one for a tablet, which I need 2 do. Plus it has been along time since I have sewed because of illness,& surgery’s. But I am gun-ho 2 start sewing again. Love watching your show especially why I was sick & unable 2 do anything. Still watching after a lot of years.
Jerri Baker
I also meant 2 tell u I love them all. But the Florida tote bag. But anyone of them would b great. THANKS

The Florida tote is the most appealing tote. It is both attractive and useful. It’s nice to have classy and functional wrapped up in one.
Lakshmi
Love the neat and clean lines of all the bags but my fav ought to be California clutch
Jane Sprague
I love the versatility of the Florida tote. It’s just the right size for almost everything!

I thought I did. I like the city bag. Be sewing for most of my life, 73 yr old and have never made a bag. Never had time to do for myself as I was a seamstress for others for 30 years. Now it is my time.
Cheryle walker
Love the City Bag no matter what fabric you use this style is casual or for work.
Sandy Davis
They all look wonderfully useful, but I think the Florida bag would be my choice because of all the pockets. I really like having lots of pockets in my bags!
Betty Harden
Love all of them, but Florida tote would be my first choice. Thanks for the chance to win. Saw your Quilt Expo show this morning and you were looking great. Really loved the quilts. I plan to be there next year.
Judy G
Although I love the grab and go style of the California Bag, I’ve got to have pockets, so number one choice is the Florida Tote.

Angela Brady
the Florida Bag
Caroline Moyer
They are all great – specially with the fabrics you picked.
I say – Hobo.
Gail
I like the Florida tote best.
Sandi Campie
I like the city bag. It is a great size and I like the simple ribbon
embellishment and stacked buttons. I agree the fabrics really make these bags attractive. I love the contrasting colors!
Suzanne Cook
How do you pick a favorite? The fabric choices are unlimited! Since I am ‘expecting’ my second granddaughter this month I would have to go with the Florida Tote first then the Hobo Tote for carrying all the wonderful things I take with me to playtime! I can never call it babysitting because I am playing and having the time of my life with my two year old granddaughter and now I will have double the fun in a few days!
Nancy
I already have the Hobo Tote, so I have to say the Florida Tote.

Lorraine
Love them all, but I think I like the California bag the best.

Hard to choose, but I like the Hobo very much
Nancy
I think the Florida tote would be my pick. I just got some new heavier fabric in a pink and orange print that I think would look great as this bag and I can see orange handles and lining and pink piping. I like the stacked ribbons and might try this on the right side of the handles.
Robin Gandy Harsh
I’ve been thinking of trying one of these templates for a while now. I think I’d like to begin with the Florida tote, it looks the perfect size.

The Town & Country Bag
Carol Stearns
I live in Florida so Florida it is!
Liz M
California Bag – I like small bags because you cannot put a lot in them. This creates less stress on your back and shoulders. I have back problems but not because of carrying around a large purse. You really don’t need alll that stuff – do you?
Liz
Carol Henry
The Florida tote would be my choice. I enjoy making tote bags. Have made the Town and Country bag. Love these templets. Thank you Nancy.
Mary Ellen
I definitely would make the tablet keeper!
Lillace Christianson
Nancy, they’re all really nice, but the Florida Tote would work best for me. All those pockets keep me organized so that I can find what I need, especially when driving. If I keep sunglasses, phone, etc. in dedicated pockets it’s easy to pull what I need without taking my eyes off the road. Have a great week!
Sharon Hancock
I would love to try the Hobo bag. I make my daughters something every year for Christmas…. They would live these bags.
Ilana
I really like all of them. Since I have to pick one, I’ll choose the Hobo Bag.
Sharon H
How can I possibly choose just one? I love all of them and I’m so glad to see them done in fresh colors and exciting fabrics! This post has made me WANT to make them, whereas the pictures on your website are, to me, not as inspiring….sorry, Nancy. So, if I MUST choose one….this is so hard because I adore tote bags, but I’d say the City Bag wins my heart today. Thanks for the great post and opportunity, Nancy!
Amy Nulty

Patricia

I like the town and country bag. It is the perfect size. Not to big. I can put it in a bigger tote bag if I have too
Linda Mattson
I think my favorite is the Florida Tote. I would also like to make the cover for my Kindle.
Natalie
California Bag gets my vote. I am now using a belt bag (aka fanny pack) almost everywhere I go — but mostly I don’t wear it, just carry it by the belt or wrap, wrap, wrap it around my wrist. The size & wristlet strap of the California Bag would make it the perfect substitute. Its expandable feature is appealing, too, for those times I need to carry something more than the basics. (Love the big bags, too, but NEED the smaller one right now!)
Carmen Williams
I love the Florida bag! I think it could easily double as a diaper bag.
Kathy
The Florida tote is the one I would pick pretty and funtctional.
Janece

Deon
I’ll vote for the Hobo tote, although the Florida & California are also great!
Dawn
I think the city bag look handy, but all are great!
Louise Johnson
I like the Town and Country Bag, but I would have used the same ribbon trim as the one you used on the Hobo Tote for its handle underside — echoing the polka dot fabric.
Mildred Squyres
I love the city bag, and my second choice would be the Nancy’s Hobo bag. I usually make a bag for our church festival each year. I enjoy making them. Sewing anything is a joy to me. I love it.
Maggie King

The Hobo Tote today, the Florida Tote another day! The City Bag on Sunday. It’s a great collection and these bags would make lovely gifts.
Donna Peters
Hard to choose just one. I’m never without a knitting project when I travel & I think the Hobo Tote would make a great bag for carrying the essentials and still have room for the wallet & keys 🙂
Barbara
It is hard to pick which one but I will go with the City Bag.
Donna C.
I’m obsessed with the Hobo Tote!! Looks beautiful in these colors, too.

I love the Florida Tote as I use outside pockets a lot. I love the color combinations and this tote would look great in browns’, yellow’s and orange for fall. I helped two of my granddaughters make totes from your Infinity Tote Showcase book and they had fun making them. Thank you Nancy for all
the great ideas and helps you provide for all the sewists.
Joyce
The Flordia Tote, but it was a tough decision, also love the City bag.

gee how can I pick just one. If I’m traveling it would have to be the Hobo Tote with the California bag slipped in. If I am just around tow. It would have to be the Florida tote. I have already made a couple of your totes and the Tablet keeper. Great work thanks.
Jane Scheef
I love the California bag. I want a clutch to carry, but love the extra wrist strap.

Amelia McNairy
Choosing is hard, but if I could only have one, it would be the Florida tote.
Steph Barry
I like the Florida tote – love to have pockets or the inside and outside. I also like the option of having a zipper top closure. I don’t want my “stuff” falling out of my bag! I am always making totes for others but I really need a new one myself!
Steph Barry

Thanks
