Stitching a Sewing Community Together

30,000 sewing, quilting, and embroidery enthusiasts gather to share, learn, and enjoy in Puyallup, WA, near Seattle. Puyallup hosts the annual Sewing & Stitchery Expo. To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of this mega sewing event, the Sewing With Nancy team was invited to capture the unique camaraderie between designers, teachers, vendors, and attendees, which happens at this annual event. Here’s my recap from the exciting celebration.
Stitching a Sewing Community Together is this week’s Sewing With Nancy online video feature. Watch Sewing With Nancy online or on PBS. Here’s a preview of the show.

Meet and Greet

One of the benefits for me at a sewing or quilting event is to meet other sewing enthusiasts. After a seminar on Seams Unlikely, an enthusiastic group gathered for some chat time.

The Sewing & Stitchery Expo is held the ninth weekend of each year. If you’re lucky, you might see Mount Rainier. On the day we left, the mountain graced the sky. You can see it, ever so slightly, in the lower right hand corner of the photo. Side note: I attended the show for 10 years before I saw the majestic mountain. I was beginning to think that the much talked about mountain was photoshopped into pictures!

Thank you for this peak at the Puyallup event. Living on the East Coast, it has been a long-time dream to attend. I see it as the ultimate in Sewing Expos.

thank you for all the wonders of sewing and showing your visits to the public shows,of which some of us would not
see otherwise. I enjoyed seeing the pattern and fabric part of the show.

I had to laugh about your comment regarding Mount Ranier’s existence. We lived at Fort Lewis back in the mid 70’s, and it was two months before the weather cleared enough for me to see it. I was flabbergasted to realize we lived so close to something that majestic thanks for stirring up that memory. I went to the Sewing Expo in 2004 – an invigorating experience.

I also laughed about the Rainier comment. Its so fickle this time of year. Then you get a glimpse and wham-o. You can’t believe something that large was there all along. Had a similar thing happen my first 6 times visiting San Francisco. Never saw the Golden Gate Bridge. Every single time, every single day, it was socked in by fog. Got lucky on trip 7 and was blown away.

I live on the east side of the Cascades and get to see Mt Rainier and Mt Adams most days. When conditions are right, I can see Mt St Helen’s, too. But I missed the event…stupid work.

My late husband was born and raised in Puyyalup! I was fortunate enough to visit a few times and it is really a sweet little town! Id love to get up that way again! Especially if I got up there at the same time as the expo!!!
