Machine Quilting with Your Embroidery Machine
February is National Embroidery Month!
If you own an embroidery machine, most likely you’ve added monograms to towels or a cute design to baby clothes. But, did you ever think that your embroidery machine’s hidden talent is to quilt layers of fabric with remarkable finesse? Welcome back embroidery and quilting expert Eileen Roche, who will show you how to double the use of your embroidery machine.
Watch as Eileen shares the magic in quilting on part two of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons on this brand new Sewing With Nancy series. If you missed part one, last week, you can always watch it online at NancyZieman.com.
Quilted Shapes
Embroidery isn’t limited to a design created by thread-dense stitches. Swirls or geometric shapes can also be embroidered. For example, the squares, circles, and hexagons as featured in Eileen’s sampler pillow, can easily be quilted with an embroidery machine. The end result is the appearance of stitching that was done by hand or with a long-arm quilting machine.
Use the DIME (Designs in Machine Embroidery) template to align shapes under the embroidery machine. See how on today’s new episode of Sewing With Nancy.
Select a design to fit the shape and let your embroidery machine do the work of a computerized longarm. You’ll be amazed with the simplicity and thrilled with the results.
All-Over Quilting Designs
If you’ve pieced a quilt top but have never taken the time to quilt all the layers together, Eileen’s all-over quilting with an embroidery machine technique is for you. The quilt sandwich is hooped section by section. Templates are used for perfect placement and then the stitching begins with the touch of a button.
Start by drawing a grid over the quilt top using a water-soluble pen. Eileen and I demonstrate how easy it is to quilt in-the-hoop: one shape at a time, one row at a time. We then nestle the subsequent row, stitch, and finish. Watch all the steps to finishing this quilt on Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons—Part Two.
Continuous Line Quilting
If you’re a quilter first, embroiderer second, you no-doubt appreciate the look of quilts that have been stitched with a continuous design. If your machine has an embroidery unit, you can accomplish the same look that is generally reserved for long-arm quilters. It’s rather magical.
- Use templates to determine placement within the hoop. Eileen shares how on today’s Sewing With Nancy episode.
. .
Eileen and I showcase how this continuous line quilting design can work on a variety of different sized projects.
Easily learn the machine embroidery quilting process. There’s no reason to be intimidated. Quilting with machine is a bit intimidating, especially when one has spent so much time and effort in the actual making of the quilt, and no one likes to make mistakes. You do such a good job with your presentations and instructions that it does help to build confidence with new techniques. I would love to have a copy of your book.
Donna G.

I am a very experienced garment seamstress, but I Have not been too keen on actually quilting, such as stippling. I recently replaced my embroidery machine, and the new one has quilting stitches. I am ready to try this now.
Sylvia M Erspamer
I am an embroiderer that has always pretty much shunned quilting but now, for some reason I do not understand, am becoming interested. I signed up for your block of the month for 2017 (but haven’t started yet-too many projects, so little time). This quilting on the embroidery machine seems very timely for me. I am intrigued. I even have the free motion kit for my BL Alliance but haven’t opened the box yet!
Helen Mao
The normal thread-dense embroidery never interested me, but this is enough to get me to look at upgrading to an embroidery machine! (My state-of-the-art-in-1990 machine can’t do this kind of work)
Barbara tait

Rebecca Johnson

thanks!
S Carter
I am a fairly new quilter and have a Baby Lock Ellageo e2, which is an embroidery machine phased out, so I don’t have much help from the dealer, but I watch your TV series and get a lot of helpful ideas, so I think this series and kit is just the thing for me. I have 10 grandchildren I am making quilts for and want to do everything myself, so I have been hesitant to finish it with the quilting. Thanks, Nancy
Judy Nicely
This book would provide me the direction I need to quilt the 50+ quilt tops I have waiting. I make quilts for Project Linus as well as items for my church’s ministry. I m so anxious to finish my quilts (wips) so that I can tackle completing the 69+ (UFOs) I have yet to pieced. Quilting is my passion and my stress relief.

I love my Babylock Ellageo Plus and would really like to start quilting in the hoop! I’m concerned about how it looks from the back though since the back of embroidered items can get messy.
Nancy Zieman
Paula, the underside looks quite nice! Since the stitching is designed for quilting, it isn’t dense on the underside. I was pleased!
Doris Pedersen

Jeannie Schultz
I have a Singer XL400 – is there a 6×10 magnetic hoop for it? I have used it to embroider quilts, but it’s always such a hassle rehooping and aligning. My machine doesn’t have the function to align the needle like yours does.
Nancy Zieman
Jeannie, here is information on the snap hoop. Check if your machine fits the needed requirements: http://www.shop.dzgns.com/products/snap-hoop
Jeannie Schultz
Thanks Nancy. It looks like there is 5×7 for my CE250, but not one for my larger machine and hoop. Oh well.
Nancy Zieman
Jeannie,
There are snap hoops sizes: 4 x 4 and 6 x 8.
http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/snap-hoop+4%22+x+4%22.do

I own an Elegante machine and don’t feel as though I have used it to it’s full capability. I have always had my quilts quilted by a long arm. This would be super to be able to do them myself. Thank you!
Carolyn Balmanno
I have a “Dream Machine” which I have used for embroidery. I have been considering using the Anita Goodesign quilt piecing designs for some quilting, but I was not sure I appreciated how the backs would look. This gives me a whole new option. Seems I need to add your book/kit to my wish list. Looking forward to a new experience. Thank Nancy

I am a 72 year old quilter. I have a Ellure els Babyloc embroidery machine that I got about 10 years ago. Of course I have made Baby blankets etc. with embroidery designs om over the years. I have also pieced and quilted quilts on this machine. I just started to free motion quilts and have made a super king, a queen and am working on another queen. I love fabrics and working with it. This series has piqued my interest in using my embroidery pattern for my machine to try this for a large quilt I did a baby quilt for a friend when I first got the machine but haven’t thought to do another one because of the weight and size. I would love to have thus book and dvd for my new learning curve. Thank you for the new knowledge.

I am convinced I will finally enjoy quilting all my own quilts with this method and can’t wait to use it this very special quilt to celebrate my friend!
Linda
What a great lesson in using an embroidery machine to quilt! I have completed two quilts this way, and yes, I had to do a lot of hooping, but it was well worth it. When I quilted the second one, I used a magnetic hoop, and I would recommend getting one if possible because , as Nancy showed, you just move and reposition the quilt without having to remove the hoop from the machine. I know that I will use some of the ideas in this lesson to finish my next quilt.
Bertha Ockert
wanting to learn more on quilting with my embroidery machine. Tired of it sitting next to me and doing nothing.

I wondered how well this quilting technique would hold up to repeated washings? I would love to try it on a baby quilt, but I’m not sure how well the knots at each start and stop point would hold up. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thank you
Nancy Zieman
The knots are very secure. To make sure, you could test the technique on a block and wash it several times to make certain.
Luanne W
What a great idea and package. FUN, FUN, FUN.
