But, did you ever think that your embroidery machine’s hidden talent is to quilt layers of fabric with remarkable finesse? Quilted Shapes
Embroidery isn’t limited to a design created by thread-dense stitches. Swirls or geometric shapes can also be embroidered. For example, the squares, circles, and hexagons as featured in Eileen’s sampler pillow, can easily be quilted with an embroidery machine. The end result is the appearance of stitching that was done by hand or with a long-arm quilting machine.

All-Over Quilting Designs
If you’ve pieced a quilt top but have never taken the time to quilt all the layers together, Eileen’s all-over quilting with an embroidery machine technique is for you. The quilt sandwich is hooped section by section. Templates are used for perfect placement and then the stitching begins with the touch of a button.
Start by drawing a grid over the quilt top using a water-soluble pen. Eileen and I demonstrate how easy it is to quilt in-the-hoop: one shape at a time, one row at a time. Continuous Line Quilting
If you’re a quilter first, embroiderer second, you no-doubt appreciate the look of quilts that have been stitched with a continuous design. If your machine has an embroidery unit, you can accomplish the same look that is generally reserved for long-arm quilters. It’s rather magical.

I have a Singer XL400 – is there a 6×10 magnetic hoop for it? I have used it to embroider quilts, but it’s always such a hassle rehooping and aligning. My machine doesn’t have the function to align the needle like yours does.

I am a 72 year old quilter. I have a Ellure els Babyloc embroidery machine that I got about 10 years ago. Of course I have made Baby blankets etc. with embroidery designs om over the years. I have also pieced and quilted quilts on this machine. I just started to free motion quilts and have made a super king, a queen and am working on another queen. I love fabrics and working with it. This series has piqued my interest in using my embroidery pattern for my machine to try this for a large quilt I did a baby quilt for a friend when I first got the machine but haven’t thought to do another one because of the weight and size. What a great lesson in using an embroidery machine to quilt! I have completed two quilts this way, and yes, I had to do a lot of hooping, but it was well worth it. When I quilted the second one, I used a magnetic hoop, and I would recommend getting one if possible because , as Nancy showed, you just move and reposition the quilt without having to remove the hoop from the machine. I know that I will use some of the ideas in this lesson to finish my next quilt.

The knots are very secure. To make sure, you could test the technique on a block and wash it several times to make certain.
