October Fall Sewing and Quilting Project Round-Up by Nancy Zieman | Sewing With Nancy

With the leaves changing and the weather cooling, it is a perfect time to get stitching on fall sewing and quilting projects. From tunics to table runners, you’ll find something for all skill levels, and all time-commitments, in this project round up.

Faux Hexagon Wall Hanging

Create a prairie-inspired wall hanging. At first glance, hexagon quilt block shapes can cause many quilters to think three-intersection-Y-seams! Not so with this Prairie-Style Faux-Hexagon Wall Hanging.

In this blog-exclusive free project, each hexagon shape is created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux-hexagon halves are stitched in columns, with all straight seams, and with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic!

Write-on Table Runner

A Chalkboard Table Runner is great for all seasons and occasions, plus it’s fast to create. Use this fun design at your next holiday potluck or dinner. Choose your favorite Christmas fabricseasonal fabric, or a novelty fabric to frame the runner, and you’ll instantly add fun to your next gathering. Your guests will enjoy labeling their dishes to pass, or writing quick messages with chalk. What a novel idea!

I’d like to share a quilt block pattern that’s ideal for a table runner. Featured is the Box Quilt Block, which dates back to 1898, each 12-1/2″ block is made with eight half-square triangles and a center square. This pattern is included in the No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks Book, a quilt block sampler pattern book. Streamline the piecing process by using the No-Hassle Triangle tool. Find the complete sewing tutorial here. Please note: This free design is part of the Fall Table Runner Challenge 2015. The challenge is no longer open for entries.

Fall Wardrobe Addition

Sometimes we just need a comfortable go-to knit top in our wardrobe. My newest pattern with The McCall Pattern Company is casual and whimsical with fashionable style lines. M7474 is a long tunic-style top. Like other knit garments, this completed piece is lightweight and travels well, too. Watch how easy this tunic is to create on Sewing With Nancy.

Sew Strip by Strip Patchwork Quilts

Continuing with our theme of using strips of fabric to create a focal design, with the Tumbling Leaves design we introduce you to offsetting the strips and offsetting the cutting of the fabric. Create this version of strip by strip patchwork in fall shades or spring colors—you get to choose. Learn the easy techniques for construction on Sewing With Nancy.

Sew a Fall Fiber Art Piece

Almost 20 years ago, I was introduced to landscape quilting techniques by Natalie Sewell, nationally known landscape quilt artist. Natalie and I became best friends and scheduled two or three quilting dates each year. During the three-part Sewing With Nancy series, Beginning Landscape Quilting, we simplify the process so that everyone interested can enjoy the pleasure of creating outdoor scenes in fabric.

The sew world is saddened by the loss of Nancy. For all the people that can not travel to workshops but want to learn what is new, we thank Nancy for the great gift of sewing. I have learned so much from that early Sat. morning show. The heavens have opened the door to someone that gave much more than she ever took. God bless Nancy and her family now. Know that she was loved by many.
