One block at a time is an easy approach to creating a quilt. Plus our BoM22 is fat quarter friendly. Whether you’re a beginner quilter or seasoned quilter, our block of the month series is a great opportunity to get stitching in the new year. Team NZP is honored to continue Nancy Zieman’s Block of the Month program with our free monthly block sewing tutorials! We’ll be keeping the finished quilt design a mystery until later in December 2022! Hint: This year’s quilt is not a block sampler!

2022 Block of the Month June: Sawtooth Quilt Block
Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.
June Sawtooth Quilt Block
This block is 12-1/2″ square; 12″ finished square.
Approx. Finished Quilt Size 59″ x 74″.

Cut Fabrics for Four June Sawtooth Quilt Blocks
Caribbean:
- Cut Sixteen 3-1/2″ squares from White Background Fabric, we’re illustrating Day and Night Dot Waves White Fabric.
- Cut Sixteen 3-7/8″ squares from White Background Fabric, we’re illustrating Day and Night Dot Waves White Fabric.
- Cut Eight 3-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Granite Peacock Fabric.
- Cut Eight 3-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Bubbles Turquoise Multi Fabric.
- Cut Four 6-1/2″ squares from Bali Batik Bubbles Turquoise Multi Fabric.
- Using the New! Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP, cut block squares above.
Construct Blocks
All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.
Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)
- Create Eight 1/2-square triangle blocks from 3-7/8″ Day and Night Dot Waves and Bubbles Turquoise Multi squares.
- Create Eight 1/2-square triangle blocks from 3-7/8″ Day and Night Dot Waves and Granite Peacock and Lime squares.
- Align 3-7/8″ squares from Day and Night Dot Waves and Bubbles Turquoise Multi, right sides together. Pin
- Align 3-7/8″ squares from Day and Night Dot Waves and Granite Peacock, right sides together. Pin
- Mark blocks using a Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge, and Clover’s White Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen.
- The left side of the Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 3-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.
- With 3-7/8″ squares right sides together. Place Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center die cut openings on gauge, with Clover’s White Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen.
- Repeat steps, marking all sixteen 3-7/8″ square block sets.
- NOTE: We are illustrating Day and Night Dot Waves White and Bubbles Turquoise Multi!
Stitch Blocks
- Insert a new Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle and attach 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot to sewing machine.
- Align 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot along one side of center mark, stitch.
- “Kiss” the next block set to the stitched block and chain stitch (stitching continually) from one block to the next.
- Rotate blocks 180 degrees, stitch along the other side of center marked lines.
- Clip threads between chain stitched blocks.
- Cut blocks apart along center marked lines with a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat.
- Press seams flat.
- Open blocks and press seams open or press towards darker fabric – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Repeat steps above and create Sixteen Half-Square Triangle Blocks from Day and Night Dot Waves White and Agate Teal and Lime.
Construct Block
- Layout half-square triangle blocks, and solid 3-1/2″ corner blocks, and 6-1/2″ center block as show below. Rotate blocks as needed.
Join Squares
- Place blocks from top row right sides together, in pairs. Pin.
- Chain stitch from one block set to the next. Clip threads between.
- Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Repeat steps above with bottom row.
- Place block sets from top row right sides together, in pairs. Pin.
- Chain stitch from one block set to the next. Clip threads between.
- Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Repeat steps above with bottom row.
- Place middle blocks from right column and left column right sides together. Pin.
- Chain stitch from one block set to the next. Clip threads between.
- Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Place middle block set from right column to center square right sides together. Pin.
- Stitch.
- Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Repeat step above with middle block set from left column.
- Place top row to center row right sides together, in pairs. Pin.
- Stitch.
- Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.
- Repeat steps above stitching bottom row to center row.
- Repeat steps above and stitch FOUR June Sawtooth Blocks.
- The June Sawtooth Blocks are complete!

- Cut Four 6-1/2″ squares from Bali Batik Gerber Violet and Yellow Fabric.
If you’ve selected the Rainbow Bali Batik Colorway, you’ll create Sixteen Half-Square Triangle Blocks from Paisley White and Gerber Violet and Yellow and Sixteen Half-Square Triangle Blocks from Paisley White and Monstera Eggplant.
- Follow steps above and stitch FOUR June Sawtooth Blocks.
