Tools & Supplies:

See how easy it is to turn your embroidery sewing machine into a quilting machine with techniques borrowed from paper piecing. Creating accurate and consistent quilt blocks, in multiple sizes, is easier than ever with an embroidery machine. First-time quilters and seasoned quilters alike will enjoy precise piecing — with every quilt block — when combining embroidery and block piecing with our NEW! Quick Quilting in the Hoop — Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection Book and Embroidery Design Files.

NEW! Quick Quilting in the Hoop — Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection Book and Embroidery Design Files

The piecing of the Square-in-a-Square Quilt Block is stitched on a fusible stabilizer, assuring precise piecing. Piece a quilt without being a quilter! Embellishing quilt blocks couldn’t be easier with the included appliqué accent designs. Appliqués are pre-merged within quilt block embroidery designs and are ready to embroider! Or choose one of the included automated machine quilting motifs, and quilt all layers in the hoop for the look of free-motion quilting.

The NEW! Quick Quilting in the Hoop — Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection Book includes 19 embroideries, some of the embroidery designs are for piecing, while others are for quilting! The embroideries are found in a downloadable link included with the purchase of The NEW! Quick Quilting in the Hoop — Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection Book at ShopNZP.com.

How to Piece our Quilt Block in an Embroidery Hoop

Here’s an overview of our techniques. There are more details shown in our NEW! Exclusive Quick Quilting in the Hoop: Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection Book. Each quilt block design is available in three sizes: The larger the block, the large the embroidery hoop size needed:

  • 5″ block requires an 5″ x 5″ hoop or larger
  • 6″ block requires a 6″ x 6″ hoop or larger
  • 8″ block requires a 8″ x 8″ hoop or larger

NEW! Exclusive Quick Quilting in the Hoop: Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection and Book available at ShopNZP.com

  • Print an optional template from collection files for the chosen design (Quilt Block with Maple Leaf Appliqué). On printed template, notice the different sections of the block and numbers within. These numbers indicate the piecing sequence. (The images feature the 5″ Maple Leaf Quilt Block.)

  • Select and Prepare Fabrics for Square on Square Blocks with Appliqué Accents: The most dramatic results are achieved by selecting assorted fabric of light, medium, and dark shades.
  • – Mountain Green Shades — center block squares.
    – Fire Engine Shades — inner block triangles.
    – Tangerine Shades — outer block triangles and Maple Leaf appliqué.
    – Wagon Red Shades — outer block triangles and Sumac Leaf appliqué.
    – Sundrop Shades — center block square.
    – Amber Shades — inner block triangles and Oak Leaf appliqué.
    – Cheddar Shades — outer block triangles.

  • Prepare all fabrics using spray starch or a starch alternative. This step preshrinks, removes wrinkles, and makes fabric crisp to allow for nice sharp folds.

Timesaving Sewing Tips from Nancy Zieman

Preshrink fabrics by steaming and pressing and steaming and pressing a second time. Stabilize fabrics for sewing by pressing and starching fabrics with June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch Savvy — press and starch, press and starch.

  • Cut Fabrics for Square on Square Blocks: Note: 5″ fabric squares work perfectly with all three sizes of the Quick Quilting in the Hoop Block’s inner and outer block triangles. Size of block determines if 5″ fabric squares are cut in half (1/2-square triangles) or in quarters (1/4-square triangles).
  • Using a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat, cut Block fabrics by cutting one 5″ wide crosswise strips for each of the five fabric colors.

  • Sub-cut 5″ wide crosswise strips into 5″ fabric squares.

  • For 5″ blocks, cut 5″ fabric squares point to point diagonally in both directions creating 1/4-square triangles for both inner and outer block triangles:

  • Cut fabric squares for block center squares (Section 1) according to block size: For 5″ blocks, cut 3-1/4″ fabric squares:
  • – 2 fabric squares of Mountain Green Shades.
  • – 1 fabric square of Sundrop Shades.

  • Import and select the Quick Quilting in the Hoop Maple Leaf Quilt Block.
  • Use a neutral thread color that works well with fabrics for the piecing sequence. For embroidering numbered “Map stitching”, choose a slightly darker thread so that you can see the stitching on the stabilizer — the numbered “Map stitching” will be hidden within the seams of the block. (We are using black thread for easy viewing.)

Meet the Hosts of Stitch it! Sisters

Stitch It! Sisters Deanna Springer from Team Nancy Zieman Productions

Deanna Springer stitched her first doll quilt when she was just six years old. Deanna’s love for all things sewing was nurtured by her mom and grandmothers, and later in 4-H. Deanna started working for Nancy Zieman companies in 1989 and is celebrating 30 years with NZ companies. Nancy and Deanna started Nancy Zieman Productions, LLC. (NZP) in 2007. Deanna worked alongside Nancy as marketing coordinator, business manager, co-director of video production, and in product development and project design. Over 12 exciting years, Nancy, Deanna, and the NZP Team launched a new BLOG, social media channels, 40+ sewing and quilting products including tools, patterns and books. Deanna and the Team NZP are proud to carry on Nancy Zieman’s legacy by continuing to share Nancy’s love of sewing through the NZP Blog and social channels, and through the NEW! Stitch it! Sisters series. Deanna is VP of Marketing, she heads up the NZP design team, designs patterns for The McCall Pattern Company, fabrics with Riley Blake Designs, timesaving tools with Clover, and values her work and partnership with Wisconsin Public Television – co-producers of Sewing With Nancy, The Best of Sewing With Nancy, and The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show.

Stitch it! Sister Dana Casey from Nancy Zieman Productions

Dana Casey was inspired to begin sewing at a young age by her family of avid sewists. At age 10, with guidance from her big sister Deanna, she stitched her first small quilt in 4-H. Dana inherited her grandmothers sewing machine, in 2000, and began sewing small projects for her young children. In 2003, she started costume making for medieval and renaissance reenactments. Since then, Dana’s sewn garments for theatrical productions, weddings and special occasions. Dana has a background in retail management and human resources. Dana joined Team NZP in 2018, as marketing coordinator, and she illustrates step-by-step graphics for the NZP Blog and patterns, heads up Team NZP operations, and coordinates the educational offerings at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, Wis.

Denise Abel from Team Nancy Zieman Productions and Stitch it! Sisters

Denise Abel grew up in a family of avid sewists. As the youngest sibling, Niecy (as she is lovingly called) was inspired by her older sisters and started sewing small projects in her early teens. Although she enjoyed crafting, sewing clothing, and quilting projects, she found her life’s passion of machine embroidery – while working as a supervisor for 5 years in the commercial apparel industry creating licensed embroidered sports apparel. Denise began working for Nancy Zieman companies in 1997 in Customer Service, then as a Sewing Advisor, and later as Embroidery Product Manager – for 18+ years. She enjoyed working on the Sewing With Nancy Team developing sewing, quilting, and embroidery products – as well as embroidery collections. In September 2019, Denise joined Nancy Zieman Productions and feels right at home with Team NZP. Denise is a fun-loving teacher, who shares her love of embroidery at work and at home – which she shares with her husband David of 25 years along with their “fur-kid”, Jordy.

The Fall Leaves Embroidery Collection is a great representation of the season with the leaf patterns and the vibrant colors. Could imagine doing this for other seasons such as summer with sand pails & flipflops or nautical themes. Winter could be represented by evergreen trees & snowmen. Spring could be presented by daffodils & bunnies.
