Straight Line Machine Quilting from No Marked Lines:
- Find a straight line on the quilt.
- Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.
- Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.
- Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.
- Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.
- Continue stitching up and down rotating quilt.
Straight Line Machine Quilting from One Marked Line:
- Mark one line using a ruler and erasable fabric marking pen.
- Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.
- Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.
- Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.
- Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.
- Continue stitching up and down rotating quilt.
Echo Quilting from No Marked Lines:
- Stitch around shape(s) with edge of presser foot, advancing foot one row inward using previously stitched line as a guide.
- Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.
- Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.
- Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.
- Work from the outside in and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line.
- Continue stitching rotating quilt.
Curved Straight Line Machine Quilting:
- Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Supersize Sliding Gauge, and erasable fabric marking pen, depress the button and mark an arch line.
- Using a ruler extend the curved line to the edge of the quilt.
- Stitch on line with edge of presser foot, advancing foot one row inward using previously stitched line as a guide.
- Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.
- Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.
- Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.
- Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.
- Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.
- Continue stitching rotating quilt.
Custom Machine Quilting from No Marked Lines:
- Place a piece of painters tape as a built in guide at desired measurement as a guide, when painters tape reaches edge of quilt, stop with needle down raise presser foot and pivot. Continue stitching as desired, working inward.
- Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.
- Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.
- Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.
- Continue stitching rotating quilt.

The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show – presented by PBS Wisconsin and Nancy Zieman Productions – is excited to announce the eighth-annual Modern Mini Quilt Challenge, taking place throughout the month of May on social media! You’re invited to join the challenge by stitching one 24-inch square (or smaller) modern mini quilt in fabrics featuring a modern color palette and design.
Brainstorm, design, and plan. Then, stitch! Enter The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show 2024 Modern Mini Quilt Challenge by emailing one high-resolution quilt image to [email protected].
2024 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show Modern Mini Quilt Challenge Complete Entry Rules:
Sew a mini modern quilt to showcase your quilting talents. Submit your entry by emailing a high-resolution image of your quilt to [email protected] by 5 p.m. CST on Friday, May 17, 2024.
- Mini Quilts must be no more than 24-inches square, and may be pieced, appliquéd, mixed or other.
- Mini Quilts must be made from fabrics in a modern color palette and design.
- Mini Quilts must be quilted through 3 layers by hand, by machine or both.
- You may enter ONE modern mini quilt completed within the last year.
- Photo entries must be sent to [email protected]; participants are encouraged to share progress and quilt photos on social media using hashtag #ModernMiniQuiltChallenge.
- Submitted entries will be shared on The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show’s Facebook page throughout the month of May.
- Winners selected by panel of judges and will be announced on May 24, 2024.
- Open to U.S. Residents only.
- Judging takes place May 20-22, 2024.
