⏰ 10 Minutes – Pretreat Your Fabric:
Prewash fabrics right after purchasing them, so they’re “ready for the needle”. Pretreat each fabric as you will wash or clean the completed project/garment. For our Ponte Knits, we recommend machine washing in warm/cold, and tumbling dry low or hanging to dry.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Gather Project Supplies
Choose a pattern style to sew. We’ve chosen View B to stitch! Gather your fabric, interfacing, thread and sewing tools. Watch the Stitch it! Sisters Program 212, 10-20-30 Minutes to Sew A Dress – The Nancy Zieman Way, reference the Tools & Supplies Listing(above), and/or check the back of the pattern envelope and pattern instructions for our recommendations timesaving tools – when sewing our McCalls’ M7871 Tunic/Dress Pattern by Team NZP.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Optional: Press Interfacing to Back of Each Pattern Tissue Piece
Before beginning the pattern fitting process. Using the tissue pattern pieces, cutout and press Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing to the back of each pattern piece – for ease in handling patterns during fitting, plus durability when sewing favorite pattern designs, again! Be sure to press with an Eze-View Press Cloth and no steam.

⏰ 30 Minutes – Alter the Pattern
In our Stitch it! Sisters Program 211, Dress Pattern Fitting – The Nancy Zieman Way Video, we show step-by-step how to increase the bust line, waistline, hip line and sleeve, using Nancy’s easy pivot and slide pattern fitting techniques.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Cut Out Dress Fabric Pieces
Layout tissue pattern pieces according to pattern guide sheet. First position all pieces that need to be placed on the fold. Second, position other pattern pieces – using just two straight pins. Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, unpin and reposition pattern pieces as necessary – placing pieces on grain and at even distances from grainline to fabric selvage. Prior to cutting fabric, double check that all pieces needed to be placed on the fold – are indeed on the fold. Reference individual pattern pieces to verify the need to “Cut One” or “Cut Two”. Reference the pattern guide sheet to be sure all pieces are placed for cutting. Use pattern weights, or commercial kitchen canned goods – to weight pattern pieces. Cut out pattern using 28 mm Rotary Cuter, ruler, mat, and 7-3/4″ Bordeaux Ultimate Fabric Shears.
⏰ 5 Minutes – Transfer Pattern Markings
Instead of cutting around notches, cut them off at the cutting line and mark notches by cutting short “nips” in the edge of the fabric at each notch or circle marking, about 1/8″ in length. Clip two “nips” at a double notches.
⏰ 5 Minutes – Set Up Sewing Machine and/or Serger
Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Jersey Stretch Ball Point Needle Size 80/12 into sewing machine and/or serger. Thread machine(s). Choose a seam option, and test out stitches on fabric scraps:
⏰ 10 Minutes – Fuse Interfacing Strips to Dress Front and Back Shoulder, Sides and Neck Seam
Cut 3/4″ strips of Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing. Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of Dress Front at neck, shoulder and side front edges.
Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of Dress Back at neck and side back edges.
Fuse remaining interfacing to wrong side of each matching fabric section.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Staystitching
Staystitch side edges of Front and Back, between notches – with 5/8″ seam allowance and 3.0 stitch length.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Construct Dress Front, Pocket, and Front Sides
On outside, stitch neckline darts in front. Press down.
On inside, stitch bust darts in front. Press down.
With right sides together, fold welt pocket along foldline. Stitch end with small circles with a wobble stitch. Trim.
Turn welt; press. Baste raw edges together. Topstitch folded edge, ending 1/4″ from finished end.
Pin welts to front, matching small and large circles. Baste.
Pin one pocket section to each side of front, over welt. Baste. Stitch with a wobble stitch, ending at large circle.
Turn pocket to inside, turning welt up. Press. Baste end of welt to side edge of front.
Topstitch front below welt with a wobble stitch, ending below large circle, as shown.
Pin one remaining pocket section to lower edge of each side front section. Stitch with a wobble stitch. Press seam toward pocket.
Pin side front to upper side edge of front. Pin pocket edges together. Stitch in one continuous seam with a wobble stitch, keeping lower edge of front free. Press seam toward center.
Topstitch side edge of front with a wobble stitch, pivoting to previous topstitching. Topstitch finished end of welt with a wobble stitch, pivoting diagonally to corner.
⏰ 20 Minutes – Construct Dress Back and Back Sides
Reinforce inner corners of back, pivoting at small circles. Clip to small circles.
Staystitch side edges of back, with 5/8″ seam allowance and 3.0 stitch length, as shown.
Pin side back sections to back. Stitch with a wobble stitch, pivoting at small circles. Press seams toward center.
Topstitch back with a wobble stitch, pivoting at corners, as shown.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Stitch Shoulder Seams and Neck Band
Pin front to back at shoulders. Stitch with a wobble stitch – catching clear elastic within seam lines.
Staystitch neck edge to prevent from stretching. Reinforce inner corner, pivoting at large circle, as shown. Clip to large circle.
Stitch short ends of neck band, right sides together.
Pin neck band to neck edge, matching centers. Stitch with wobble stitch and 1/2″ seam allowance, stretching neck band to fit.
Press seam toward neck band.
Turn neck band to inside, encasing raw edges. Pin.
On outside, spread seam with fingers until previous stitching is visible.
Stitch on top of previous stitching, stitching in the ditch/well of the seam.
Optional: Attach an edgestitching presser foot to your sewing machine to make stitching in the ditch a breeze. The guide on the foot aligns with the well of the seam.
On inside, fold neck band, bringing stitching lines together, form- ing a tuck. Stitch to small circle. Press to one side.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Fuse Interfacing Strips to Dress Front and Back Shoulder, Side and, Neck Seams
Stitch basting stitches at upper edge of sleeve between small circles.
Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, press up 1″ hem. Unfold.
With right sides together, pin sleeve to armhole edge, matching circles and notches.
Stitch armhole seam. Trim seam allowances to approximately 3/8″ below notches. Press seam toward sleeve.
If you have a serger, now’s the perfect time to trim and clean finish the edge at the same time.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Stitch Side Seams
Pin front to back at sides; pin sleeve edges together. Stitch in one continuous seam. Stitch underarm again alongside previous stitching, as shown.
⏰ 20 Minutes – Hem Dress & Sleeves
Cut 1″ strips of Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing. Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of lower dress hem. Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, press up 1″ hem.
Cut 1″ strips of Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing. Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of sleeve hem allowances, as shown.
Turn up sleeve hems. Stitch hem with wobble stitch, blind hem stitch, double needle stitching, or serger cover stitch.
Turn up lower dress hem. Stitch hem with wobble stitch, blind hem stitch, double needle stitching, or serger cover stitch.
Stitch sleeve hems and lower dress hem with a wobble-stitch: Set machine for a slight zigzag (2.5 or 3.0 length and .5 width). This stitch gives the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam. Or, hem with the coverstitch on a Serger Overlock Machine!
