Pattern Fitting Tutorial for McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern M7871
- Use Nancy’s Right Size Measurement Fitting Chart to determine your pattern size, and cut out your Right Size pattern pieces.
- Use Nancy’s Personal Fitting Chart to record your body measurements and plan your pattern alterations.
- Take a small amount of time and follow Nancy’s step-by-step fitting techniques for a pattern that is “fit to be tried.”

Before beginning the pattern fitting process, press Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing to the back of each pattern piece, for ease in handling–plus durability! Be sure to press with an Eze-View Press Cloth and no steam.
- Place sleeve pattern piece on Pattern Making Paper; trace around all pattern edges–using a black marker.
- Measure the needed increase with Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge; mark increase lines with a red marker.
- Place a pin at the stitching line at the sleeve cap; pivot the pattern to either increase mark. Trace sleeve top, pattern notches, and about 1″ along the side seam, using red marker.
- Pivot the pattern to opposite increase mark. Trace sleeve top, pattern notches, and about 1″ along the side seam, using red marker.
- Slide pattern horizontally; trace new side cutting lines.
- Using Sewer’s Fix It Tape, tape original pattern to the new pattern and cut out.

Place dress/tunic front pattern piece on Pattern Making Paper.
- Using Sewer’s Fix It Tape, tape side front inset to front pattern piece.
- Trace around all outer pattern edges–using a black marker.
- Measure the needed bust, waist, and hip increases with Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge; mark increase lines with a red marker.
- Place a pin at the stitching line where the shoulder and armhole intersect. Pivot the pattern out to the bust increase mark. Trace the new armhole cutting line with red marker.
- Keeping the pattern pivoted, move the pin to the stitching line where armhole meets the side seam. Pivot the pattern to the waist and/or hip increase mark. We’re showing only a hip increase on our pattern. Trace the new side seam with red marker.
- Pivot the pattern to the original side seam at hemline and trace the remaining side seam, and pattern notches, with red marker.
Place the pattern in its original position, notice the change. The bust, waist, and hip areas are increased, yet the neckline and armhole are the same size as the original pattern. Plus your pattern is still intact!
- Pivot the pattern back to the bust and waist alterations. Remove side inset and mark the new front pattern piece side inset cutting line with red marker.
- Using Sewer’s Fix It Tape, tape original pattern to the new pattern and cut out.
- Cut out the side front inset pattern piece according to the original pattern shape.
- Repeat steps above and alter your McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern, M7871 dress/tunic back pattern pieces with Nancy’s easy Pivot and Slide pattern fitting methods.
