⏰ 10 Minutes – Pretreat Your Fabric:
Prewash fabrics right after purchasing them, so they’re “ready for the needle”. Pretreat each fabric as you will wash or clean the completed project/garment. For our Ponte Knits, we recommend machine washing in warm/cold, and tumbling dry low or hanging to dry.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Gather Project Supplies
Gather your fabric, interfacing, elastic, thread and sewing tools. Watch the Stitch it! Sisters Program 114, 10-20-30 Minutes to Sew A Tunic – The Nancy Zieman Way, reference the Tools & Supplies Listing(above), and/or check the back of the pattern envelope and pattern instructions for our recommendations timesaving tools – when sewing our McCalls’ M8022 Tunic/Dress Pattern by Team NZP.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Prepare Pattern Pieces
Choose a pattern view, and cutout pattern pieces needed project. For greatest accuracy, extend the pattern grainline so it’s visible the entire length of each pattern piece. Fold tissue pattern along the grainline arrow and press with a dry iron to extend the line the full length. Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and a permanent marker, mark pattern grainline the entire length of each pattern piece.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Optional: Press Interfacing to Back of Each Pattern Piece
Before beginning the pattern fitting process. Using the tissue pattern pieces, cutout and press Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing to the back of each pattern piece – for ease in handling patterns during fitting, plus durability when sewing favorite pattern designs, again! Be sure to press with an Eze-View Press Cloth and no steam.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Alter the Pattern
In our Stitch it! Sisters Program 113, Tunic Pattern Fitting – The Nancy Zieman Way Video, we show step-by-step how to increase the bust line, waistline, hip line and sleeve, using Nancy’s easy pivot and slide pattern fitting techniques.
⏰ 30 Minutes – Cut Out Tunic Fabric Pieces
Layout tissue pattern pieces according to pattern guide sheet. First position all pieces that need to be placed on the fold. Second, position other pattern pieces – using just two straight pins. Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, unpin and reposition pattern pieces as necessary – placing pieces on grain and at even distances from grainline to fabric selvage. Prior to cutting fabric, double check that all pieces needed to be placed on the fold – are indeed on the fold. Reference individual pattern pieces to verify the need to “Cut One” or “Cut Two”. Reference the pattern guide sheet to be sure all pieces are placed for cutting. Use pattern weights, or commercial kitchen canned goods – to weight pattern pieces. Cut out pattern using 28 mm Rotary Cuter, ruler, mat, and 7-3/4″ Bordeaux Ultimate Fabric Shears.
⏰ 5 Minutes – Transfer Pattern Markings
Instead of cutting around notches, cut them off at the cutting line and mark notches by cutting short “nips” in the edge of the fabric at each notch or circle marking, about 1/8″ in length. Clip two “nips” at a double notches.
⏰ 5 Minutes – Set Up Sewing Machine and/or Serger
Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Jersey Stretch Ball Point Needles Size 80/12 into sewing machine and/or serger. Thread machine(s). Choose a seam option, and test out stitches on fabric scraps:
⏰ 10 Minutes – Fuse Interfacing Strips to Tunic Back Shoulder Seams and Sleeve Hems
Cut 3/4″ strips of Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing. Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of Tunic Back Shoulder Seams, and to wrong side of Sleeve Hems.
Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, press up 3/4″ hem on sleeves.
⏰ 10 Minutes – Staystitching
Staystitch side edges of Front and Back, between notches. Staystitch and ease sleeve caps by holding fabric behind presser foot with pointer finger –as shown in the Stitch it! Sisters Program 114, 10-20-30 Minutes to Sew A Tunic – The Nancy Zieman Way.
⏰ 20 Minutes – Construct Tunic Front, Pocket, and Front Side Sides
⏰ 10 Minutes – Construct Tunic Cowel Collar
Place strips of tape to collar – between circle markings – to mark “no-sew zones”. The tape is a reminder to stop stitching!
Using Clover’s Clip ‘n Glide Bodkin, to insert Elastic Shock Cording into Cowel Collar.
In the next step, use the 5/8″ width of Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, to mark casing stitching lines – on each side of the cowl seam.
⏰ 20 Minutes – Construct Tunic with Nancy’s Flat Construction
With right sides together, pin flat sleeves to armhole edges, matching notches and circles. Stitch Sleeve caps to Tunic. Stitch front to back at Side seams, stitching from the bottom Tunic hem to the wrist area of sleeve –as shown in the Stitch it! Sisters Program 114, 10-20-30 Minutes to Sew A Tunic – The Nancy Zieman Way.
⏰ 20 Minutes – Hem Tunic & Sleeves
Cut 1″ strips of Pellon’s Easy-Knit Interfacing. Fuse knit interfacing strips to wrong side of hem. Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, press up 1″ hem. Topstitch hem with wobble stitch. Refold Sleeve Hems and topstitch hem with wobble stitch.
