You’re invited to join the 2022 NZP Table Runner Sewing Challenge by stitching a table runner and showcasing your sewing and quilting talents. Table runner entries may be any color palette, feature any sewing, quilting, or machine embroidery techniques, and must be a size that fits on a kitchen or dining table—use your imagination! Enter one table runner that has been sewn within the last year and has not been entered into a previous Nancy Zieman Productions Table Runner Sewing Challenge. Enter the NZP 2022 Table Runner Sewing Challenge by emailing one table runner photo to Team NZP at [email protected]. Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.
- Following instructions included with the Quilt As You Go: Venice Table Runner, cut fabric squares and rectangles.
Assemble Quilt As You Go: Quilt As You Go: Venice Table Runner
You’re the designer! Audition your fabric and create a layout. Create a scrappy look like shown in the Table Runner Sewing Challenge Badge, or a chevron look as shown below. We’re using the Love Always Fat Quarter Pack by Anna Maria for Free Spirit, and Cotton Shop Plum by Amanda Murphy for Benartex.
- Place wrong side of backing fabric to unprinted side of printed batting. Make sure backing fabric completely covers printed area.
Use June Tailor’s June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick or Quilt Basting Spray to spray baste substrate to backing fabric!
- Place fabric square piece one – right side up onto printed blue square placement section marked number one.
Printed blue lines are for placement only and are not stitching lines.
- Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold fabric piece number one in place.
- Place rectangle fabric piece two onto piece one, along blue placement lines, with fabric right sides together.
- Insert a new Schmetz Machine Quilting Needles Size 90 into your sewing machine, and attach a 1/4″ Quilting Foot.
- Stitch with a scant 1/4″seam along long edge of rectangle at placement line between pieces one and two. Fold open seam.
- Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand to press seam open. NOTE: Do not iron.
- Place rectangle fabric piece three along blue placement line, with fabric right sides together.
- Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along along placement line. Fold open seam.
- Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand to press seam open. NOTE: Do not iron.
Roll opposite end of table runner and attach Clover’s Jumbo Wonder Clips–for ease in handling the long table runner during the stitching process.
- Continue placing fabric rectangles following numbering, with fabric right sides together.
- Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along outer long edge of rectangle. Fold open seams.
- Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand to press seams open. NOTE: Do not iron.
- Place fabric piece 29 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together.
- Stitch with a scant 1/4″seam along long edge of rectangle at placement line. Fold open seam.
- Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold fabric piece in place.
- Place fabric piece 30 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together.
- Stitch with a scant 1/4″seam along long edge of rectangle at placement line.
- Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold fabric piece in place.
- Fold open seam.
- Place Ruler along placement line 31 and mark line with Clover’s Chacoliner.
- Place Ruler along placement line 32 and mark line with Clover’s Chacoliner.
- Place fabric piece 31 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin.
- Place fabric piece 32 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin.
- Stitch seams with scant 1/4″seam along long edge of rectangle at placement lines. Fold Seams open.
- Place fabric piece 33 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin.
- Place fabric piece 34 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin.
- Stitch seams with scant 1/4″seam along long edge of rectangle at placement lines. Fold Seams open.
- Place fabric piece 35 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin. Fold seam open.
- Place fabric piece 36 along blue placement line with fabric right sides together. Pin. Fold seam open.
- Edgestitch around outer edges. Trim edges square.
- Bind Venice Table Runner with your favorite binding method.

How to Enter
2022 Nancy Zieman Productions Table Runner Sewing Challenge Guidelines
- Select or create your design. All sewing, quilting, serging, machine embroidery, and/or embellishment techniques are eligible. Table Runner must be made within the last year and may not have been entered into previous NZP Table Runner Sewing Challenges.
- How to enter: Send ONE high-resolution quality image of your finished Table Runner to [email protected] by 11:59 p.m. CST on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Include your full name, hometown, and a sentence or two about your Table Runner.
- One entry per person; open to US residents in the 48 contiguous states only.
- All Table Runners will be judged, and winning entries will receive a prize from our generous sponsors!
