Use our NEW! No-Hassle Triangles Ruler to make five block sizes for both 1/2- & 1/4-square triangles: 2-1/2”, 3-1/2”, 4-1/2”, 5-1/2”, and 6-1/2”.

Cut Fabrics
1. Cut crosswise fabric strips.
- Stach two starched fat quarters right sides together.
- Reference markings on the NEW! No-Hassle Triangles Ruler for making 3-1/2″ 1/2-square triangles. To make 3-1/2″ 1/2-square triangles you’ll cut 3-7/8″ crosswise strips, from each of the eight Hocus Pocus Fabrics.
Subcut strips into squares—also known as block sets.
- Cut five 3-7/8″ squares from each of the eight crosswise fabric strips.
Construct The Units
All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.
The step-by-step photos illustrate construction of block pairs.
Half-Square Triangle Units (HSTs)
1. Align 3-7/8” fabric squares, from two Hocus Pocus Fabrics right sides together. Note: Find finished blocks below to see our fabric selections for block pairs.
Mark block sets using a No-Hassle Triangles Gauge and fabric marking pen. The left side of the gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge and move to size of the desired 1/2-square triangle.
Place No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center of gauge with fabric marking pen.
2. Stitch blocks.
- Attach 1/4″ Patchwork Foot to sewing machine (optional).
- Set machine for straight stitch 2.0–2.5 mm.
- Align foot along one side of center mark; stitch. Do not cut the thread.
- “Kiss” the next block set to the stitched block, and chain stitch from one block to the other.
- Rotate blocks 180 degrees, and stitch the second side of the blocks.
Use Clover’s Stilletto/Awl to assist with guiding blocks under presser foot.
- Continue chain stitching until all block sets have been stitched.
- Cut the blocks apart along center markings with rotary cutter, ruler and mat.
- Clip threads between chain stitched blocks.
- Press seams to the dark side of the half-square blocks, and use a Tailor’s Clapper to flatten seams.
- Each block set makes two half-square triangles!

I just went over to my library and found Nancy’s 10-20-30 Minutes to Sew from the 1990s….I used to sew a lot when I was younger, not so much today, but have always been a fan of Nancy’s and have followed her posts (and now yours) faithfully all these years. She was an original and her tips and techniques were and still are invaluable. She made sewing so much fun!
Happy Sewing!
