December 2022 NZP Block of the Month: Assemble & Finish!

Our NEW! 2022 Nancy Zieman Productions Free! Block of the Month Mystery Quilt Series is a great way to finish a quilt in manageable monthly installments. One block at a time is an easy approach to creating a quilt. Plus our BoM22 is fat quarter friendly. Whether you’re a beginner quilter or seasoned quilter, our block of the month series is a great opportunity to get stitching in the new year. Team NZP is honored to continue Nancy Zieman’s Block of the Month program with our free monthly block sewing tutorials! We’ll be keeping the finished quilt design a mystery until later in December 2022! Hint: This year’s quilt is not a block sampler!

Starting February 19 and on the third Saturday of each month in 2022, we’re posting a new quilt block sewing tutorial made with our official BoM22 featured fabrics! This year, for the first time, you may choose from two different NEW! Bali Batik Palettes Fat Quarter Bundle Colorways by our friends at Benartex:

• 3 yd. White Block Background Fabric, choose one: NEW! Day and Night Paisley White, or NEW! Day and Night Dot Waves White, or NEW! Day and Night Geo Bloom White Fabric by the Yard, or a coordinating light fabric from your stash.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Assemble and Finish

Approx. Finished Quilt Size 59″ x 74″.

NEW! Bali Palettes Caribbean Quilt Colorway

Cut Fabrics for inner border, outer border and binding.

• Cut Four 3-1/2″ crosswise fabric strips from White Background Fabric, we’re illustrating Day and Night Dot Waves White.

• Create one continuous fabric strip by joining the four crosswise fabric strips together at short ends, right sides together, with diagonal seams to reduce bulk. Trim away excess fabric leaving 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams flat, then press to one side.

• Cut Eight 1-1/2″ crosswise fabric strips from border fabric, we’re illustrating Bali Batik Agate Teal and Lime Fabric.

• Create one continuous fabric strip by joining the sixteen crosswise fabric strips together at short ends, right sides together, with diagonal seams to reduce bulk. Trim away excess fabric leaving 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams flat, then press to one side.

• Cut Ten 2-1/2″ crosswise fabric strips from binding fabric, we’re illustrating Bali Batik Agate Teal and Lime Fabric.

• Create one continuous fabric strip by joining the ten crosswise fabric strips together at short ends, right sides together, with diagonal seams to reduce bulk. Trim away excess fabric leaving 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams flat, then press to one side.

Construct Quilt Top

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

• Prepare quilt blocks by pressing and starching and trimming all blocks to 12-1/2″ x 12-1/2″ square.
• Layout block rows as shown below, or you’re the designer, you may choose your quilt block layout!

• Working with one row at a time, join blocks one and two, and blocks three and four, right sides together, using scant 1/4″ seams.
• Pin and stitch.
• Press seams open or to one side.
• Repeat with remaining rows.

• Working with one row at a time, join block sets one and two, and block sets three and four, right sides together, using scant 1/4″ seams.
• Pin and stitch.
• Press seams open or to one side.
• Repeat with remaining rows.

Stitch Rows

• Align row four to row three, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.

• Align row five to row four, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.

• Align row six to row five, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.

Add Inner Borders

• Align one 3-1/2″ inner vertical border on long sides of quilt top, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.
• Repeat step with second 3-1/2″ inner vertical border.

Add Outer Borders

• Align one 1-1/2″outer border on long sides of quilt top, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.
• Repeat step with second outer border.

• Align one 1-1/2″outer border on short/top side of quilt top, right sides together, as shown:
• Pin. Stitch.
• Press seam flat, then press to one side.
• Repeat step with bottom outer border.

Finish Quilt

• Quilt Layers using your favorite quilting techniques.
