Dive into Art Quilting
On today’s episode of Sewing With Nancy, we continue with part two of How to Sew Art. Start with a photo, choose fabrics, and then follow steps to turn a common digital image into spectacular wall art. Tammie Bowser, a quilt innovator, will show us how to transform ordinary fabric into fine art.
In a recent post, I shared an overview of How to Sew Art part one, including choosing a photo, downloading the software, printing the pattern, creating a fusible web sandwich, and selecting fabrics.
- Either of these two software programs will turn your photo into a pattern. Choose from the Stitch-A-Sketch Art Quilt Software or Quilted Photo Deluxe 2.0 Art Quilt Software.
In How to Sew Art part two, the magic happens!
- Learn techniques for cutting the pattern pieces.
- See how to cut and add the fabric pieces.
- Watch Tammie demonstrate the stitching/quilting process.
- See how to add texture with Cotona thread and Angelina fibers.
In How to Sew Art part two, you’ll also see an inspirational gallery of Tammie’s quilts!
At Tammie’s website, howtosewart.com. you’ll find details on downloading a free software trial. The software turns an image into an art quilt pattern and includes the Gerber Daisy image below!

Bye for now,
Deanna Bishop
If I were to win, I would do a picture of my late sisters Dawna and Debbie. And I would figure out or have someone crop a picture of me with them. I have no pictures of the three of us together and only a couple of them from when my sister Dawna was going through chemo. She passed away 16 years ago when she was 37 from cancer. I miss her every day. And this is what I would do if I win. My parents had 3 girls together. I am the only surviving daughter left. My older sister died 15 years ago.
Sharon Kirby
This is so very beautiful and quite fascinating to look at. I am a beginner quilter.
Sandra Smith
I have been really interested in this software program for a couple of years now, and was able to get a quick look at what she offered for a limited time, but life got in the way. Now that I can pursue it more, I don’t see that there is much in the way of any reviews from people who have used the software. The only review I spotted was not that good. Can you direct me to some actual users so that I can get a good picture of how it performs? All the information I find is old, even on her web site, and I don’t want to put $250 into something that doesn’t work well.
Nancy Zieman
Sandra,
Check out Tammy’s site. There are a few testimonials listed. Consider calling Tammy’s office number if you have questions. She’s very willing to help.
Polly Odom
I would use this software to make pet portraits.
Cyndi
I would do a picture of my husband and I when we were first married. I would then do a picture to celebrate our upcoming 40th anniversary!! What a blessing-40 years!!
Jean
What beautiful work Tammie has done. I would probably start with a picture of my Dad’s dog that passed away, and make a small piece he could hang or frame.
Nan
I will use it to make memory quilts for my daughter of each of her grandmas. I’ll also make a quilt with all the pets we’ve had. I’ve wanted to do these quilts for several years now and the only thing that’s held me back was not having software to get the images changed in images I could work with.
Jayne Szilagyi
I would love to make a portrait quilt of our first grandchild. His name is Matyas, and he was a beautiful baby! Thank you!
Cindy
I would use my favorite photo of my father in a red wagon w/my son in front as he taught him how to roll down the driveway. Dad was 6’3 so it was quite a feat to fit into the wagon
Marsha
I would love to quilt a photo of my sweet grandchildren; I have so many photos of them together, hugging and smiling! Any one of them would make a beautiful memento!
Anne Z.
I would make quilts using family vacation photos.
Marsha
I am intrigued by this artwork. I have software from Brother to do the embroidery art quilting. I would love to do my grandson’s life adventures with the family and the pets that we have had. Of course this would be a wall hanging for him. He is young, 7 years old so I could add all his adventures. And what a beautiful graduation gift just for him.
Naomi
Love pictures of children facing away from the camera. When Making an art quilt from this type of photo you really need to capture the feeling of the photo. I would love the challenge if I won this prize.
Nina
I have a wonderful close up photo of my son sailing.I have always wanted to make a quilt from that photo but wasn’t sure how to start.
Janet Balcolm
Thanks for the chance to win. I would like to make a lap quilt for my daughter of her two dearly missed cats.
Gail Beam
I think I would like to do pictures of my grandchildren using this amazing method using embroidery to transfer their pictures to fabric..
Beth Piper
If I were to win. I would use a photo of my daughter and her fiancé working in Tanzania at Beho Beho. Something that when they move back to The States they will always have this piece of art to remember their time in Africa. I would also use some of the lovely batiks she have brought back to me from Africa. I think they would be lovely and work well in this type of art.
Beth Piper
I love the shows you’ve done on sewing art and want to make something out of the African batiks by daughter has given me .
Bev Hancox
I’ve been making wall hangings of the pets that have shared their lives with us. This would be an interesting technique for a unique one.
Marty
Already purchased the How To Sew Art DVD and set Nancy’s Notions offered last year, and love the process! Would also love a discount offer on Quilted Photo Deluxe 2.0 software… haven’t felt confident enough to justify purchase it at regular cost as yet.
Debbie
I would really like to use a photo of my precious daughter holding her baby boy. He was only 11 mo old when his mommy moved to Heaven. Of course he does not remember much and I do all I can to make sure he knows what she is like. I’m winging an art project right now of a mother and baby giraffe – and realizing I need some professional help! I have admired Tammie Brower’s work for awhile now.
Robin
I would do a quilt of my two kitties together. They are so cute!
Maeve
I cannot use a photo of my beautiful grandson who is adopted from S. Korea but that is what I have wanted to use for an art quilt for so long. He has autism and is such a joyful boy. It would be great to learn how to make a quilt from his photo.
Rain Klepper
After seeing these shows last year, I tried to purchase the software on her website without success…the code never worked, etc. I enjoyed the free trial, and made two quilts…I would love to actually use the software!
Beth
This is truly amazing. Something I have wanted to try for awhile and when I saw this program on tv I couldn’t believe that Tammi makes it look so easy. This would open my quilting into a whole new horizon for me. My daughters fiancé is a photographer and guide in Africa and takes some amazing photos of animals and people. I would love to win this.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Caroline Gerneglia
I am planning to do a picture of my mother. She passed away just a few days short of her 921nd birthday and I have planned this ever since I first saw the program with Tammy. She does amazing work and I would like to learn how to do the stitching like she does. I have done pictures of my grandchildren before–an enlarged color photo but used mostly straight stitches and covered the photo entirely with stitching. We really like the picture, but I really want to do my mom’s like Tammy does hers.
Mary Ellen
I have a great picture of my Mom with a big smile, wearing a fuchsia hat that my younger sister and I decorated for a Mother’s Day Event at her assisted living home. In that moment she was so happy; it’s a joyful memory for me.
Meriul
What fun it would be to create a quilt of my two little grand daughters who were recently adopted into our family via fostering. Thanks for this opportunity.
Mary Schmidt
My mother just passed away after a long time with dementia and I would love to create a quilt of her.
Debbe
What photo I would use is one of all my grandchildren together and our newest addition our great granddaughter too !
