How to Make My Modern Mini Folded Flying Geese Wall Hanging

Quilt Expo Modern Mini Quilt Challenge, 2017, Quilt Expo, Nancy ZiemanHalf-square triangles and bias edges are not needed to make my Modern Mini Folded Flying Geese quilt pattern. Use folded triangles (or Prairie Points) to create this traditional design. Using squares, folds, clever pressing, and columns, the piecing couldn’t be simpler.

I’ll show you the basic technique for assembly so that you may incorporate this easy Flying Geese design in your quilts. To read more on creating a large wall-size quilt using the Folded Flying Geese technique, check out my book, Quick Column Quilts.

Cutting Directions:

  • Flying Geese: Cut 2″ to 6″ squares from five to six different colors of fabric.
  • Cut four strips 1-1/2″ wide by width of green fabric for the narrow border.
  • Cut four strips 2-1/2″ wide x width of background fabric for outer border.
  • Background or columns: Cut 2-1/2″ wide to 6-1/2″ strips from light blue background fabric.

Fold and Stitch Techniques

Stitch Flying Geese to Columns

  • Use a Folded Flying Geese unit that is at least 1/2″ narrower than the corresponding column width.
  • Lay the geese along the background column in a loose arrangement.
  • Mark the placement of the first folded triangle with a non-permanent pen.

  • Let the sliding gauge assist in keeping the longest edges parallel to each other. Pin.

  • Fold the column strip, right sides together, at each marked placement line. The Folded Flying Geese unit is sandwiched between the fabrics. Press.
  •  Stitch 1/4″ from the fold.

Notice the background ends may not line up. Don’t worry; they’ll be trimmed to size later.

  • Use poster board or tag board with a 20-1/2″ x 20-1/2″ window to audition the quilt’s focus area.
  • Mark the background fabric with a non-permanent pen. This will help align the columns at the sewing machine.
FoldedFlyingGeese NancyZieman 16
  • Join columns using 1/4″ seam allowances.
  • Trim square using the poster board window as a template.
  • Add a 1-1/2″ inner (green) border to the trimmed quilt. Press. Trim.
  • Add a 2-1/2″ outer border to top and bottom edges. Press. Trim.

  • Add the remaining outer border strips to the right and left sides.

Note from Nancy Logo  When quilting this Folded Flying Geese project, make certain to choose a quilting design that will maintain the integrity of the dimensional fold. Or, simply stitch down the center of the Flying Geese units with monofilament thread to secure to the columns.
